496057 2006-11-02 12:48:00 Hi, A couple of people i know are wanting me to come in with them to create what they call a Server, all i know it is like forum like this one but has nothing to do with PC's at all, but i have no idea whats so ever what is involved in building a Server from ground up, thats what they are saying they want to do.
I believe it takes the knowledge of a Computor professional, but as i said i before i don't know nothing about this type of thing and i am hoping someone here could give me a rough idea what is involved.
thanks in advance for any help.

496058 2006-11-02 19:32:00 A little more information would be helpful. Do they just want to run a forum? Unless it's a truly huge one, chances are that it won't need its own server and that shared webhosting will be fine.

Also as you said they want to build one - what kind of net connection will it be connected to?

496059 2006-11-02 20:05:00 Yeah a little more infomation would be a good idea, in particular what they intend to use the server for. Pete O'Neil (6584)
496060 2006-11-03 03:47:00 Its intended to be a health forum for people that have rare health disorders that with our combined knowledge may help them more than whats been offered to them with normal conventional methods, its non profit, we will try to help in in our spare time, whats left of it anyway.

thankyou for your interest

496061 2006-11-03 05:18:00 I have been trying very hard to find material on the internet to explain what is required to get a server up and going but i have found nothing of real value as yet, this why i am here, even if someone knows a site that i could visit to get a rough idea of it all, as i have some PC knowledge but apparently its quite differant than running a normal PC.
thanks guys

496062 2006-11-03 05:35:00 You do not need to build a server. To host a website that includes a forum similar to this with message boards all you need to do is find a suitable web host and then either install yourself a forum software package, get them to install it for you, or many web hosts include forum software packages that are ready to go and you can just customise layouts, styles and other features etc with a click of a button by just using the administrator control panel.

The more assistance you require from the web host with setting up your forum the more expensive it will be.

496065 2006-11-03 06:15:00 You just need shared web hosting unless the forum is huge, in which as you would need a VPS or dedicated server. Check out this list of hosts (www.weblist.co.nz). maccrazy (6741)
