2006-11-01 07:11:00 | I'm helping a mate fix an IBM ThinkPad, with XP-Pro. The system won't boot into windows, getting as far as the WIndows XP Splash, a brief blue screen, then reboot. I can't get into any of the windows safe modes, including command prompt. The machine does not have a CD player, but I can boot Knoppix off a USB key (so have backed up his files). I want to do a repair install, and was hoping to boot the WinXP cd off the USB key, but can't quite figure out how. Other option is to copy the setup files to the dead comp and execute from there, but I can't get a command prompt. SO......how do I reinstall windows on a comp with no CD?:stare:

2006-11-01 08:13:00 | In the short term....no. I'm sitting here with a beer thinking "this has to be possible with the limited tools I have". Maybe not. Still, the beer is cold and thats a start! Cheers

2006-11-01 09:45:00 | If you can fit the I386 directory off the XP CD onto your USB stick. Then go into the I386 directory and start the install with the command WINNT

2006-11-01 09:51:00 | How about formatting the USB first in a system format, then copy the files off the XP CD. Hopefully the thinkpad will recognise the USB as a bootable disk.

2006-11-01 10:16:00 | The hardest problem won't be simply booting off the drive. The thing I doubt you could do is get the Windows installer to recognise the USB drive. It's a two step process - both the BIOS and the booted system have to be able to access the drive and use it properly. | TGoddard (7263) | |
