495602 2006-10-31 21:25:00 Hey peeps :D

I am looking at building a media centre PC and where I live, we are only able to get a TV signal via digital satellite, so a digital tuner is a must (this will be used for free to air channels) I have a dedicated Sky digital box (which I will feed the output of this into the analogue coaxial input) but want the freedom to record/watch free to air while on Sky if you get my drift ;).

I have a Hauppauge card ATM so will prefer a Hauppauge card, but I am open to suggestions

Thanks :)

495603 2006-10-31 23:03:00 You most probably want a program then to record from the video in line, if the tuner you're getting has one on the back of it.

If u get a PIP tuner there shouldnt be a prob, thats what theyre for.

But if you're talking about using a standalone tuner to get digital, I doubt it. It wouldnt be any tuner, it'd have to be a tuner that can get satellite, and you would have to pay to see it.

495604 2006-11-01 03:11:00 Hmm... seems I didn't say that I was after suggestions for the cards  :p

I am thinking of getting XP Media Centre with SP2 so...

I have been doing a little looking and have sent a few E-Mails and I was looking at the Hauppauge HVR-1300 which has digital and analogue inputs, but while trolling roung the site I found the Hauppauge HVR-3000 this:

WinTV-HVR-3000 features

Triple mode free-to-air TV receiver:
Digital satellite DVB-S
Digital terrestrial DVB-T Freeview
Analog PAL cable or TV aerial TV What do you mean by:

Cause you can get digital decoders that will let you watch free to air TV (TV1,2,3 Prime etc) which only costs the box plus initial setup...

You can get DVB PCI cards. Which get satellite and most probably local TV programs, I think. Thats what I meant. There's one here somewhere. BUT I think you have to find some kind of program that gets the channels, Not much use if there's no satellite dish I spose.

Yer I know u can buy digital decoders, for round $200 or something.

Dont think theyre out yet tho.

495606 2006-11-01 05:20:00 Yes, they are the ones . . .

The card comes with the WinTV application . . . so that (I would think!!) could get them, I am not sure if MCE can . . . (should I would think . . . ) but I am guessing you are not sure?

There is a sat dish up here so that is no big .

I guess I will have to wait and see what the reply to the E-Mails are . . .

Just a quick question on specs . . . what do you think will 'do the job'? not over the top etc but to a good standard?

495607 2006-11-01 06:00:00 What are you talking about Speedy? Your post dont make alot of sense.

While digital tuners aren't that common over here there are a few avaliable. From what ive read there are a couple of different standards used worldwide for broadcasting digital tv so make sure the card you buy will work in NZ. I was reading a tread at OCNZ a while back and a Avermedia card was frequently mentioned as one of the best avaliable, but i think you have to import them from Australia.

It might be an idea to try and find a forum dedicated to HTPCs as they would probably be better informed and be able to tell you which chipsets are better etc.

If in doubt you could always get another Hauppauge card, they always seem to be reckonmended by those in the know.

495608 2006-11-01 07:56:00 Yes, I am going to make sure the card will work with the free to air and Sky output (analogue) before I buy it... hence my asking here for experiences etc :p

Thats not a bad idea, I never thought of that... do you know of any off hard (NZ ones)

Yeah, thats what I thought, I know Hauppauge, but I am open to suggestions for anyone :)

495609 2006-11-01 08:20:00 Theres no software for decoding sky so you'd still have to use the sky decoder to do the decoding and then use video in to input it as an analogue video signal. Thus the digital tuner wouldnt actually be used for sky, you would only be using the video in feature which the majority of tv capture cards have. Your only concern should be in regard to the tuner and free to air content.

As far as im aware there are no dedicated HTPC website in NZ, atleast none of any significance. Try a google search for some overseas ones.

495610 2006-11-01 08:33:00 I know about the Sky part, and it is illegal. I have a decoder already what I mean is keep that and have the analogue output of the decoder going into the analogue input of the card, as you said.

Yes, I know there is free to air digital round, just need a box, we used to have one but got rid of it. that is what I want the card to be able to do.

I have had a bit of a search and found none really... it is just the different satellite standards etc that I was wanting to try a NZ forum, thats all. But I will continue to look.
