496346 2006-11-04 02:20:00 Have been considering dumping Telecom phone and taking Ihug's plan ADSL2 which is $10 cheaper if they have all the phone rental.
Anyone know any reason why this would be stupid??Ron..

There is no such thing as ADSL2 here in NZ at the moment ;)

496351 2006-11-04 03:05:00 I think you mean you want the ADSL broadband 2 ( www.ihug.co.nz) plan from Ihug.

Read the fine print first. To get the $10 discount you have to have your phone with Ihug. To have your phone with Ihug you must also purchase a calling plan (www.ihug.co.nz). The cheapest calling plan is $10. If you do not actually need any of the calling plans, then you might as well leave your phone with Telecom and just pay the extra $10.

Edit:
Oh, and ring and lodge a complaint about not being able to have your phone with Ihug without purchasing a compulsory (yet often unrequired) calling plan. Their sales teams are monitoring how many people squeal about this and they may change how they bundle things.

496352 2006-11-04 09:27:00 Good point, Jen. That broadband 2 plan looked like a no-brainer for me till I realised the real costs. My biggest 'problem' is that I have my telephone line and basic SKY bundled with Telecom so I would take a cost hit if I dropped that. Currently I am with IHUG on the old 2Mb/2+2GB plan at $39.95 and that works OK for me. I guess if I want to go to the higher speed I will have to pay another $10. If I could be sure of a noticeable advantage I would cough the extra $10 but I am not at all sure I would notice the difference! Back on the back burner! linw (53)

If you allready had your tolls with them for the plan you have(I'm guessing you did) then they will give you a bare $40 "home phone" landline with no bundleing necessary - I switched my landline to ihug the begining of the week, and after "explaining" that I would like to move my landline over, but was certainly not prepared to pay more for the privilege, I was offered the basic plan with no required bundle (as I allready have tolls with them - but tolls alone are no longer an option for new accounts)
Having this as a standard basic option may become necessary as well, as Jen says, they are monitoring the situation - but they will only do it if there is enough pressure to give them the insentive - and Jens suggestion there sounds like a winner too! :)
I allready made my opinion very clear to them on that point! - lol

496354 2006-11-04 20:58:00 Thanks for the info, bevy. Yes, I do have tolls with IHUG. The reduction in SKY fees makes mine a bit more complicated. It would be $10 extra whether I got your arrangement or just paid the $50 without landline. Think I will sit and wait to see what settles out. Who knows, Telecom might ditch the SKY hookup and that would change the scene. But this forum is useful for sharing info. linw (53)

I already have my tolls with them under my current plan, and was a little put out to find I would have to pay extra to have my phone with them. The guy I was discussing this with certainly never gave me the option of having a basic bundle without the calling plan. Time for another phone call I think ... :D
