496264 2006-11-03 20:56:00 One of my machines uses Thunderbird and yesterday it started failing to connect with ihug's smtp server. Keeps asking for the server password. I know ihug is having mail server problems but the same machine has no trouble sending via Outlook Express and my main machine has no problems sending using Outlook. The connection problem is still there with AVG and ZA switched off.

Anyone else seen this selective failure?

496265 2006-11-03 21:01:00 With Ihug's mail issues, I thought you only got a message about unable to connect to the smtp server. The fact it is asking about a password suggests you need to check your settings in Thunderbird. Try setting up the password again from the account settings and also make sure you have the password correct. Jen (38)
496266 2006-11-03 21:13:00 SMTP Outgoing server does not require a password unless you are using secure authentication.
Go to preferences/privacy and select Passwords Tab and remove any password for the SMTP server

496267 2006-11-04 02:09:00 Sounded good, Safari (thanks for your trouble), especially as there were two references to the smtp server in the privacy section. However, deleting them made no difference. Life is cruel. But, as you say, the password request is somewhat spurious for a smtp server. The error box is specifically asking for the password for myusername on smtp.ihug.co.nz. Later it says the server is unavailable or is refusing smtp connections. But OE has no problems on this machine.

It's especially puzzling as it's my wife's machine and she absolutely positively doesn't touch any settings! I haven't fiddled with Thunderbird, either (honestly!). But, clearly, something somewhere has changed! I will keep looking at TBird but it has been running uneventfully for over a year now so it is puzzling. Version is 1.5.0.7 FWIW.

Cheers and thanks.

496268 2006-11-04 02:19:00 Fixed! Went into Tools/Account Settings/SMTP Server and found it was set up as a secure server. Re-did it and problem solved. No idea how that happened but maybe it had something to do with IHUG's smtp problems?? Bit of a puzzle but as Helen says, time to move on! linw (53)
496269 2006-11-04 10:08:00 Had the same problem for the last couple of days.

Spoke to a nice guy at the Ihug Help desk this morning who suggested "unticking" password - that didn't work until I relogged into TB - now works a treat.

He suggested to me that in view of recent spam issues at Ihug and their installing new servers, to leave it for a couple of days before "re-clicking" password back on again :)

I am now back to being a happy chappie :)

496270 2006-11-04 10:27:00 yep! - had the same problem myself connecting from outlook express a couple times this last week... "server password"
first time I changed my password etc but was still the same problem
Had a suspicion it may have been their end and not mine, as I'd read about the mass spam which had given the mail servers some troubles, so just left it, sure enough, the next morning connected and recieved mail no hassle at all.
