496306 2006-11-04 23:41:00 Another trick to reset the BIOS to original factory default is to unplug the puter power cord from the wall, and then press the START button you use to turn the puter on. Hold it for a little time...maybe 30 seconds is enough.

Replug the puter power cord back in and reboot.

It will take a little longer to come up..don't worry..It is re-finding things that were originally set in the BIOS before you did the little trick I just mentioned.

This will actually discharge the CMOS battery that is responsible for remembering the last configuration...and when it goes dead, it has to reestablish the settings again.

The CMOS battery is rechargable...don't worry...it'll be back up and running very quickly.

Come to think of it...nah! Wait till next post to see if this works first.

Unfortunately your latest suggestion didn't work.

Have you any other ideas that could help?

496308 2006-11-05 22:34:00 Jen, the laptop will be connecting directly to the 604T so that resolves one of your mysteries! linw (53)
496309 2006-11-05 22:54:00 Its not something to do with the computer trying to connect manually is it? Had this problem just recently and managed to get it fixed with xtra helpdesk.Another one I've found is that Zonealarm will sometimes set itself so it wont allow any traffic so I have to reset to medium security.Just a thought. 496310 2006-11-05 23:19:00 Are you up to a repair install with your original cd-system disc?

This may be the last resort.

496311 2006-11-06 04:04:00 OK . . . . maybe we should be asking this person if they can find the rather larger connection in back of the puter . . . it looks like a telephone jack (female) but it is larger . This is a sure indicater that there is a NIC somewhere . . . even if it's on the mobo . They could then tell at least where the device is . . . . like on the mobo or hidden in the expansion slots .

Oldferix said in one post that he haid "VIA Family Fast Ethernet" adaptor installed in control panel, which is the VIA Rhine adaptor . VIA don't make add-in NIC's that I'm aware of so this would HAVE to be onboard . Before going and doing anything so drastic as reinstalling windows, really try reinstalling the drivers . You can find these at viaarena . com . If the make of motherboard is known then we can advise of the exact driver package to use

496312 2006-11-06 04:09:00 Again, this would all be an academic exercise if everyone ran Belarc Adviser just once when their system was new and theh again after every modification and hardware change.

It would be a lot easier to see the report on the mobo, hardware, RAM, S.M.A.R.T. values and everything else....shame.

496313 2006-11-06 05:05:00 In an ideal world Surferjoe that would work, but that world wouldn't have humans.. :D

I just find it strange that Windows doesn't see the Ethernet equipment as a yellow ? or a network listing.

Just to keep everyone up to date I have phoned Oldferix who happens to be my cousin. The desktop has gone to a computer hospital in Hastings.

Oldferix has a laptop with a wireless NIC. The desktop has onboard ethernet as the "blue cable plugs into the top third of the case." "The laptop is not connected to the desktop but is connected to the Modem/Router."

This makes me think that the desktop has a wireless NIC as well as onboard.

At the moment Oldferix cannot access the internet as the Laptop now does not work as the Desktop is away hopefully being fixed.

More as I find out.

Just be aware rhat you are not being ignored.
