496405 2006-11-04 21:04:00 Do you have a CLI editor such as pico or nano installed? You could use one of these from your console and edit the file as Jen suggested above. Alternatively run as root:

sed -i -e "s/default 0/default 1/" /boot/grub/menu.lst

This will perform a search and replace of "default 0" with "default 1" on the file and edit it in place. Back the file up first!

496406 2006-11-04 21:15:00 Well . . something happened . . or didn't . . .

It's just sitting there staring at me . . . I have a window open that has the header:

menu . 1st [modified] - KWrite

Now . . do I re-enter the command su - again?

I tried that and nothing again . . . . this in the window that came up as noted above .

I still have the Shell - Konsole window stacked behind it with the line:

su -
kdesu kwrite /boot/grub/menu . 1st .

496407 2006-11-04 21:21:00 Well..something happened..or didn't...

It's just sitting there staring at me...I have a window open that has the header:

menu.1st [modified] - KWrite

Now..do I re-enter the command su - again?Ah ha! It is menu.lst not menu.1st. The lowercase L and number one look very similar. Close that window without saving and try the command again with the correct syntax. :)

When you have kwrite open with the menu.lst file you will see writing similar to what I posted as an example before. You just edit the required change and make sure you save when closing.

Extra edit:
Please copy and post here your entire menu.lst after you have edited it so that I can check you have done it correctly before you reboot.

Extra extra edit:
Just incase you were wondering, menu.lst is the same as grub.conf. Under the /boot/grub directory that menu.lst merely points to the grub.conf.

496408 2006-11-04 22:40:00 OK . . .

I got thru the first part and got:

boot . grub . menu . lst - KWrite

. . . . window opened . . . but again it's blank

Is there some way to make this give me some command text to modify? So far I see nothing happening .

I DO have that old Shell-Konsole window stacked behind the boot . grub one, and it has that old line:

xauth: creating new authority file /home/joe/ . Xauthority
kdesu: WARNING: No X Authentication info set for display :0 . 0

496409 2006-11-04 22:52:00 The correct syntax is very important .

I can see from your "boot . grub . menu . lst - KWrite" that you have opened up KWrite with a file name of boot . grub . menu . lst . Because this file does not exist you get a blank page in KWrite . From that I am guessing you did "kdesu kwrite boot . grub . menu . lst" .

Did you enter in the following keeping the white spaces and forward slashes?

kdesu kwrite /boot/grub/menu . lst

Copy the line above and paste it into your konsole window . Make sure you have the $ sign prompt showing in the konsole .

The message below you see in the konsole is normal and you can ignore it:
xauth: creating new authority file /home/joe/ . Xauthority
kdesu: WARNING: No X Authentication info set for display :0 . 0

496410 2006-11-04 23:16:00 OK!!!!!

I am in!!!

Now to make the changes....

I really don't know what was different this time...maybe it was just the 31st try that toggles the text/code.

Here's what I see:

timeout 15
color cyan/blue white/blue
foreground ffffff
background 0639a1

gfxmenu /boot/grub/message

title MEPIS at hdb1, kernal 2.6.15-1-586tsc
kernal /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-1-586tsc root=/dev/hdb1 nomce quiet vga=normal.

title Windows at hda1
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

title MEMTEST
kernal /boot/memtest86.bin

496411 2006-11-04 23:40:00 I see the way GRUB has its entries on Mepis is a little different.

You need to add what is in blue between the following other lines:

timeout 15
default 1
color cyan/blue white/blue

Note there is no = sign between the option and setting like I was previously mentioning for Mepis.

Save the file and then reboot! That should be it. :)
