496341 2006-11-05 20:16:00 Don't use MCE its a pain in the ass, there are heap of alternatives out there that are far easier to use and setup. Just google for PVR software. There honestly not that hard to setup as long as you stay away from MCE. Oh ok, I know of GBPVR which happens to be made here in NZ (Wellington) and that is some very good free software, I guess I could just get XP and run it off of that... The only reason I would like MCE is because it is 'official' :p if you know what I mean. but I guess if there is better software I should go with that... actually GBPVR is skinnable... so it could look like MCE :D The_End_Of_Reality (334)
496342 2006-11-05 21:35:00 Ubuntu + MythTV would be free Pete O'Neil (6584)
496343 2006-11-05 22:50:00 Oh ok, cool, another thing to try, I have a Ubuntu CD here some where... just is it easy to configure? I have tried Linux and liked it... but could not be bothered learning how to use it and configure it...

Also does it have this compatibility issues that MCE has?

496344 2006-11-06 00:48:00 Theres some pretty lengthy installation guides on the internet for installin MythTV on most distros. MythTV has a big userbase so the majority of hardware is supported, aslong as you dont buy anything to rare. Also assuming it has linux drivers which alot of hardware does these days.

Choose a frontend and then build the PC to suit it, it'll be much harder building a PC then trying to find a frontend with support for all your hardware. Realistically the only peice of hardware that might cause you problem due to compatibility would be the tv tuner.

If your video card has vivo support why not just input sky via that and thus remove the need for an overcomplicated tv tuner. Then you could buy one of the readily avaliable Hauppauge cards which has a huge support base in the HTPC community.

496345 2006-11-06 01:00:00 I also found KonppMyth... a Linux distro (knoppix) designed for Myth TV or something so I am DLing it now.

By front end I am guessing you mean OS and programs?

What I want (I probably should create a new thread...) is analouge TV reception and free to air digital (satellite) and Radio and I am going to put the Sky decoder into the RCA input or whatever the input is that is not coaxial.

I have a Hauppauge card in this maching (PVR-350) it is good, but I want the digital, radio and analogue reception, the Hauppauge HVR-3000 would suit perfectly, but I am not sure if we can get them in NZ...
