497096 2006-11-07 04:50:00 I am using a Dell Pentium 4 which has a CD/DVD drive that the 'Device Manager' identifies as, 'HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC 4481B'. I am trying to find out what type of disk I should buy to burn DVD's but cannot work it out from this identification. Can someone help me by simply telling me if I should buy a DVD - R or a DVD + R? Many thanks, redape redape_oz@yahoo.com (11403)

You should be OK with both, but I believe DVD-R is a more popular format.

What is the model number of your Dell?

PS* I have deleted the duplicate thread you had posted. :)

I believe you can buy either one. If I remember correctly, it used to matter which kind you buy depending, but anymore you can use either kind.

497099 2006-11-07 04:56:00 You need to provide more information about your drive, a google search brings up very little information other than a few forum posts that suggest your drive is only a CD-RW and DVD-ROM combo drive. This would mean it cannot burn DVD's. Pete O'Neil (6584)
497100 2006-11-07 05:00:00 I dont think this is a DVD burner.

Its a cd writer and a dvd, not a dvd writer.

497101 2006-11-07 05:30:00 It appears to be an LG manufactured CD-RW and DVD ROM drive, so I agree with the above, it's not a DVD burner at all, only a DVD reader.

So it will not matter what type of DVD media you buy, none will work.

Its a cd writer and a dvd, not a dvd writer.

This could be a problem, haha

I didn't even take notice. I assumed he had a dvd burner which would account for his question.
