497112 2006-11-07 04:24:00 The problem started after I upgraded my Firefox to version 2.0, however I don't think that this was the problem. Every time I ran Firefox 2.0 for a little while it would use up 99% of the cpu and then lock up and would not respond.

I tweaked Firefox with all of the fixes people had mentioned for memory leaks. No success.

I reverted to my old version of Firefox, but the problem continued. Thinking the next best step would be to completely uninstall Firefox. I did this and then installed Opera 9.

The problem still persisted.

Here are some screen shots.

497113 2006-11-07 05:01:00 Are you going to the same website(s) with both browsers and then noticing the problem? If so, do the websites use a lot of flash?

I take it you have scanned for malware using a reputable program?

Yes, I scanned for malware and adware .

I have been visiting the same sites, but have never had the problem before .

When I experienced the problem with Firefox I downloaded a plugin which disabled all Flash unless I clicked on it and that did not help at all .

Some sites I visit have a lot of flash, such as myspace, but I have experience the problem on many other sites as well . Sometimes I can open the browser and it will immediately happen and other times I can browse for a while until it happens .

497115 2006-11-07 10:05:00 How much memory do you have? I don't know whether Windows counts paging or memory allocation time towards the CPU usage for a process, but if it does then this could happen if you're running out of memory and can't page fast enough.

It could also be your antivirus or antispyware software itself. As I said, I'm not sure how Windows estimates CPU usage. Since it's happened on two separate browsers something funny must be going on.

497116 2006-11-07 15:42:00 I switched back to the Firefox 2.0 since it wasn't the problem and I like it much better than Opera, and the problem has seemed to stop. I'll post an update later on about this if I find it has stopped or continued. o0omystiko0o (11404)
497117 2006-11-07 20:58:00 Scratch the last post. The problem still exists.

Loading this page seems slow as well.

I'm seriously perplexed by this. I installed Flashblock on Firefox.

497119 2006-11-07 21:07:00 And what version of Opera were u using?

A version of Opera (doesnt say what version), used up 100% of the CPU, if u were using google maps and at some other sites.

497120 2006-11-07 21:13:00 I was using the latest version of Opera which is I believe 9.0

I uninstalled that and reinstalled Firefox 2.0 along with Flashblock.

I just had to reboot it before posting because this forum caused it to happen as well. I really don't think it's any particular page. It just seems to happen intermittently.

I have seen this problem with FF when it is not set as the default browser, and instead has to wade thru some IE-driven site with Flash and ActiveX running before it ever gets to Firefox .

Try checking and/or resetting Firefox as the default browser and see if the problem goes away or at least gets smaller .
