I have this hard drive in an enclosure I guess you could call it, there is nothing wrong with the drive as it has been checked.
It will not install on Windows XP, I have tired it on 2 different XP computers, 1 with Pro and 1 with Home.
It comes up with an error saying one of the usb devices atatched to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it.
I have had it on a Windows 2000 computer and it installs like a dream, i formatted the drive , copied stuff to it, basically everything you would want to do with it as a backup drive.
Anybody got any ideas? Are there some known issues out there with XP and external drives like this?

Thanks anybody

496729 2006-11-06 03:50:00 Hi there
Yes Sp2 is installed, all updates are also on both computers.
All other Usb devices work.
It seems strange that it is the same on both computers in 2 different locations.
Seems like there is an update or something missing from Xp

496730 2006-11-06 03:53:00 Are you plugging it into the USB port, or into a USB hub, thats connected to a USB port? Sometimes, plugging USB devices into a hub doesnt always work.

And after u installed SP2, did u delete the USB controller entries in device manager, and reboot??

Sometimes USB doesnt work properly till u do this as well.

496731 2006-11-06 04:09:00 Plugging directly into the port on both computer's, I know all about Usb, had heaps of issues over the years.
Yes deleted in the device manager as well, it shows up in there as unknown device. Tried installing new hardware and it won't go there.
What is different about XP from 2000? that is the issue.

Pass, didnt have 2000 long enough to find out. Theyre basically the same.

And XP has probably got more eye-candy in it.

Only diff I noticed while 2k was installed was I couldnt use my DV cam on 2k
since it didnt detect it and didnt have the drivers for it, whereas XP detected it and installed the drivers for XP. So, I could use it.

Which is the main reason why I'm not using 2000 now.

Does the BIOS on this system supports booting from USB devices?

496734 2006-11-06 04:33:00 Both computers support booting from Usb
Xp detects but it just won't recognise which is really weird, I would say there is a problem with the housing for the drive but if 2000 installs it ok it can't be that?
interesting just installed it on another XP machine freshly loaded and it installs correctly, obviously there is an issue with the other 2 computers.

496735 2006-11-06 05:36:00 Do any of the computers have only USB 1.1? Try downloading and burning a Linux live CD (e.g. www.slax.org) and booting it on the troublesome computers. If it works running from the CD then the problem is in software. Otherwise a hardware incompatibility problem with the drive is the most likely culprit. TGoddard (7263)
