496791 2006-11-06 05:51:00 Heyas... How and where do ISP's connect to Xtras servers? Do they connect at Xtras main block of servers (which I assume is where the Southern Cross cable connects); or do they connect further down the line somewhere?

Background of this... was looking at my ISP's (Slingshot) network status page and noticed they have upgraded their UBS servers, but the constant outages of Slingshot (and other ISP's apparently) are being blamed on Xtra. Slingshot reckon this is due to be resolved about 30 November, which I am willing to wait until and see what happens.
Further background; .... when I started using Broadband, I started with Xtra (I can't remember if it was 2Mbps down or 3.5Mbps down). Anyway, when it was advertised 3.5Mbps down, I was getting consistant ~3.4Mbps downloads, very few outages. When contract ended, did some research, discovered I could get more data for same amount paid if I went with Slingshot (with tolls). Did that, and noticed consistant speed dropped to ~3.2Mbps down. Okay I figure, will keep an eye on this. Lately (less than a fortnight BEFORE everyone started implementing unlimited ~7.8Mbps down broadband) I noticed our speed has dropped again (usually ~1.9-2 Mbps), we are getting more outages and having to reboot the modem more often.

Incidentally, I'm ~1-2 km from local exchange. No more than 2 km definitely.

p.s fanboy comments of what ISP is best are unwanted, hence why I stipulated gurus only :)

According to: www.ispmap.co.nz

ISP’s connect to Xtras servers at Xtras / telecom Global Gateway http://www.global-gateway.net.nz network.

I Hope this if of some help :) & I will be interested to see what Chris, Juha, any Telecommunications guru have to say, & Tazz you may even be lucky that some one from Orcon, or one of the Other ISP's who lurk on PressF1 may even reply :D

496794 2006-11-06 09:23:00 Doesn't really matter where/how they connect. It all goes through Telecoms exchanges and cabinets and their copper wiring into your house.

New infrastructure.....sigh..........:groan:

496796 2006-11-07 04:21:00 Hi Tazz,

Sorry, didn't see this message until now . It varies from ISP to ISP as to what kind of network connection they have with Xtra . Some have a bigger pipe, others a more narrow one .

Unfortunately, neither Telecom/Xtra nor TelstraClear peer at the Auckland Peering Exchange (APE) or the Wellington Internet Exchange (WIX), the arguably most efficient and affordable way to have provider interconnectivity .

Can't say I'm a telco guru, but what you describe doesn't sound related to the above, but more to the congested DSL network . Others are complaining too that they're not getting very good performance at the moment .

Others are complaining too that they're not getting very good performance at the moment . I was mainly curious as to the fact when I connected (with Slingshot) the drop of around 200Mbps down . That, and the fact they are blaming Xtra . Is there likely any truth that Slingshots issues are with Xtra, or are they looking for a scapegoat and picking on the most convenient?

496798 2006-11-26 19:58:00 The outages you saw are likely to be the Layer 2 tunnel "collapsing" - it's sorted now according to Telecom, but you had to reboot the modem before to re-establish the tunnel.

I don't see how Xtra would be behind Slingshot's problems though.

496800 2006-11-26 21:40:00 Instead of building another stadium. Why not spend that money on upgrading our Broadband system. Run fibre optic to every Phone Exchange?. For a start. Park a satellite above NZ? Isn't there Fibre Opic cable (?) already in place alongside the raulway line from Wellington to Auckland? How about country wide wireless? PJ Poppa John (284)
