1408766 2015-09-22 23:29:00 We are expecting the contractor to install a UFB connection to the three premises in our right-of-way in the next couple of weeks, and will be using this for our Orcon broadband connection. I am told that this will also become our means of telephone communication with the rest of the world, and we will have no copper connection available, which seems to be the growing trend. This raises two issues for me.

1. How do our phones connect to the telephone network, and will our four Uniden XDECT8155 digital cordless phones still work?

2. Will we still have the facility available to continue with our monitored alarm system?

Unless they rip out the copper wires is there any reason you cant keep landlines? ,

1408768 2015-09-22 23:56:00 We have Orcon Fibre here, digital cordless phones work as per normal, through Orcons modem.
Chances are your alarm system wont : you'll need to check with orcon .

1408769 2015-09-23 03:38:00 Phone lines delivered over fibre are connected via a port on the ONT/Router. To feed your existing Jackpoints may require the house to wiring to be reconfigured slightly, some ISPs offer this service and some leave it up to you to sort out. Any standard phone should work in theory but bear in mind unless you power the ONT from a UPS your phone will die in a power cut along with your internet.

The two installs I've seen just included wiring to a single jackpoint next to the ONT, but because this is an existing jackpoint in these cases it's a simple matter to common the house wiring to the ONT and disconnect the old Copper at the ETP, it'd take a tech about 5 mins.

1408770 2015-09-23 22:35:00 Thanks for the replies guys. It is all starting to become clearer to me, and it looks like the alarm people are able to sort their end of the problem. Thanks again. Richard (739)
1408771 2015-09-23 23:18:00 Why didn't you get the Fibre with UberGroup?
They are so much better than Orcon and they are local! :D

1408772 2015-09-23 23:51:00 Probably because I have never heard of them! Also I have been with Orcon for some years after they took over from Igrin (who were local). The service and product I have had from Orcon has been impeccable with never a hitch or a hassle. Why change now? Richard (739)
1408773 2015-09-24 11:42:00 I've seen a couple of people with orcon fibre and they weren't getting the speeds they were paying for.
Orcon always blamed the customers equipment.
Both of them since changed to uber and now get the correct speeds without changing any of their equipment.
