1408407 2015-09-15 06:53:00 Quick question here. a friend has a laptop running W7x86 Ultimate, SFC /SCANNOW showed there are damaged files and didn't repair them. Considering doing a Repair-Instal but she cannot find the W7 installation dvd. I recall reading somewhere that if you don't have a OS dvd then a begged/borrowed/stolen one can be used to perform the Non-destructive task with data files in the 'Old' folders created from which files can be moved into the new folders created from Repair-Instal. Is that correct of not. She can use my W7 disc.....or she can download one from www.microsoft.com So, basically, can a Repair Instal of W7x86 Ultimate be done using a W7 x86 Ultimate OS disc having a different License key to the one installed in the computer to which the Repair-Instal is to be carried out..
Also, as her computer system is fully updated with Windows/MS updates and SP1, to do the system Repair-Instal, using a OS Disc that doesn't have SP1 included, will SP1 have to be uninstalled from the computer in order that the Repair-Instal can be done: because it is done using the 'Upgrade' option and if the OS DVD doesn't have SP1 included then the installed system is newer than that which is on the OS DVD, so it is not an Upgrade is it. To my mind, upgrading W7 Ultimate to W7 ultimate isn't an upgrade.
One final thing, there is only 20GB free space on the HDD, is that enough to do the job if it can be done as described above.

1408408 2015-09-15 07:37:00 Simple answer - you can use any same W7 DVD, the product key is not in the DVD, so if you have a W7 DVD that's the same it can be used. Pays to have one that has SP1.

A repair install on W7 HAS to be done from within Windows, you cant boot from the DVD and repair install ( unlike XP) Have a read of the following article www.sevenforums.com

20GB of spare space is the minimum - more will be better. Make sure all data is backed up before starting other wise if it all turns to custard you can lose everything. Seen it happen countless times, where it gets stuck, cant go forward or backward.

As for ISO links -- Theres other threads today posted that have suggestions.

1408409 2015-09-15 10:57:00 wainuitech, thanks for the detailed reply. I plan to disk image backup to one of my external drives the complete C drive in her computer and then, maybe, create more usable space on the installed HDD by deleting Documents and music/videos. .
The link you supplied I already have read that. Yes, a OS DVD containing SP1 would be the answer, I may have to create a .iso from mine and then download/slipstream SPi to it. Cheers.
