| 1399781 | 2015-05-01 04:27:00 | Hi Team I am about to purchase from a UK supplier some specialised components for inclusion in power filters that I manufacture here in NZ. Total cost ex-VAT for 10 of these items is about 270 GB Pounds +shipping. The ex UK cost is about 25% less than the NZ price, hence the attraction of sourcing off-shore, because that makes the final product more economic for clients to buy in NZ This is new ground for me and I am finding the process to be a bit of a minefield. I need to get my costs right, because I may take a bath if I end up paying VAT in the UK, then GST when they cross our border. My margins are slim and I make my a fair proportion of my net profit out of installation and ongoing service. The filters I build are a very special item and over the years I would have sold only 20 or so. So, my question is this: If being shipped out of the UK to a destination in Godzone, will they still incur VAT at the time of purchase? Cheers Billy 8-{) |

I am still a citizen of England as well as here but since moving here I have never had to pay vat on anything I get shipped here. VAT only applies to anyone buying while in the country as GST does here | gary67 (56) | ||

What you need to check is if duty applies, which would mean checking the tarrif code of the item, the customs site can help you. If duty and gst on the item is over $60, then you would have to cover that at customs before the items are to be released. A general rule is if its less than NZ$400 all up and no duty, it shouldn't incur extra costs. Duty can usually be the unforeseen cost however, so do check that out. Cheers, KK |

| 1399784 | 2015-05-01 06:11:00 | I have imported automotive tools from UK via ebay, and also from a sellers ebay UK or affilated store (Ronson Tools I think) No UK tax direct, as noted on the invoices that I recieved. But I think some UK sellers are importing from China - particularly specialist tools and lubicrants. These are often sold only by UK (and USA) sellers on ebay. Meaning, I think UK sellers, have corned certain products from China to resell. I would check the manufacturing source of your items. Compare say withh alibaba.com using Google Image search. I once googled mapped one UK seller location, and the items were shipped from storage units from a small ancient looking countryside cobblestone housing village. Some invoice details from one seller: Get Direct Shop - Mill Road Sheffield, Walsall, West Midlands, WS4 1BU, VAT Reg GB- 947520313 (no charge), Royal Mail. I was expecting a large Wholesale or retail store, from an industrial area. I then found later similar packaged unknown branded items stacked up in The warehouse NZ, or Mitre 10. |

If it arrives and it's over $400, it'll cost you NZ GST + import duty and a bunch of other stupid little fees too, so if it can be declared under $400 then it's for your benefit. |

I was going to order 10 of that specific item, which would exceed the $NZ400 by a margin sufficient to catch the eye of Customs, but I can split that into two purchases, because I don't need all 10 at once. The vendor is RS Components, and the items are of either UK or US manufacture ([probably via China!), so now all I have to do is find a way to get the VAT withheld as they don't seem to have an option for excluding VAT for offshore deliveries. Funny thing is, a few years back I imported an electronic instrument from the US and the cost was around NZ$2500. All the paperwork was there for the reading, and the value was stated, but it cruised through without incurring GST or any other loading! Cheers Billy 8-{) |

| 1399787 | 2015-05-03 11:14:00 | I have an idea that if you deal with a mainstream UK exporter, or through a licensed UK Customs Agent, you may be able to claim the VAT back. That may be done after the fact, but the cost of the Agent may well be prohibitive. Could be worth investigating. | WalOne (4202) | ||

| 1399789 | 2015-05-04 02:20:00 | I've always found RS components to be one of our most expensive suppliers and only use them when I can't get things elsewhere. | dugimodo (138) | ||
| 1399790 | 2015-05-04 05:08:00 | I've always found RS components to be one of our most expensive suppliers and only use them when I can't get things elsewhere. You are not wrong there, but sometimes there are no viable alternatives. Sadly I'm still in strife, I went through the ordering process right through to the last detail, which was to add 'New Zealand' and I had the Via card ready to go, whereupon I found that the site was UK only! I'm going back now to check the Oz site, but in the meantime I've emailed the manufacturers in Finland to see if they will sell & ship direct. Cheers Billy 8-{) :( |
