2015-04-29 08:22:00 | I get my new Galaxy S4 Mini tomorrow, and just read a report (www.techtimes.com) that the opsys can be upgraded to Lollipop. I dunno if this is a good thing or not, having never used anything above 2.x. Looking forward to trying it though. | Greg (193) | |
2015-04-29 10:08:00 | My Xperia Z3 compact did a WiFi download last week and asked me if I wanted to update to Lollipop. I did that and it seems to be spot on in most things. Quite a clean interface I thought. :-) Ken

2015-04-29 11:12:00 | I accepted the Z3 Compact update too and ticked everything by default. But a lot of things have become worse! Particularly the video camera (I only take 4k). For some reason the new system keeps using battery after I stop filming. My pocket is burning 20 minutes later. I'm still trying to track down the problem to see whether it is Lollipop or Sony or what app is the culprit. I'm suspicious of Google+ as it seems to use 20% of the battery Other backwards steps - - now, whenever I use 4k a message pops up suggesting I change to Internal Memory. This requires an extra step to clear the message before filming can begin. The Clear button is tiny and hard to see in daylight. This happens every time I wake up the phone - not just when I launch the app. An annoyance when I'm hurrying to capture some action - notifications now appear on the locked screen and you get rid of them by swiping upwards (as before). But now this is the only swiping direction to unlock the phone - you can't swipe sideways. It's awkward when I am holding the phone sideways for taking videos and have carefully positioned my fingers to keep them out of the picture - now there is no dedicated "Volume" setting, just sliders for Media, Alarms and Ringtone (plus the external volume rocker). Guess which of those 3 sliders handles text message arrival? Media. The last thing I want is the phone producing sound when I'm checking a video recording so I really want the media volume turned right down - but that kills text message notification. Together with the effect of the external volume rocker, it's easy for me to miss text messages because the volume is accidentally turned down - they also can't get it right what a "notification" is. Sometimes it is just the system messages at the top of the screen. Sometimes it means text messages. Sometimes it means when anything arrives on the phone - but not voice calling! Their handling of sound is a bit of a mess quite frankly - there used to be a button to "Close All" - to kill everything I've opened. Very convenient. But Lollipop has got rid of that. Now I can only close individual apps one at a time by tapping the 'x' on each one. Worse, the 'x' doesn't appear straight away - there is a 1 - 2 second delay (and if you hit it too early you open the app) - the new scheme uses up an extra 1 - 1.5 GB of internal memory There are one or two improvements (such as the orange circle for choosing Write Message when texting) but overall things are worse and I wish I had stayed with 4.4.4

2015-04-29 12:34:00 | Allow me to help: Particularly the video camera (I only take 4k). For some reason the new system keeps using battery after I stop filming. My pocket is burning 20 minutes later. I'm still trying to track down the problem to see whether it is Lollipop or Sony or what app is the culprit. I'm suspicious of Google+ as it seems to use 20% of the battery Turn off the auto-backup. It's probably keeping your phone awake trying to upload 4K video to G+ - now, whenever I use 4k a message pops up suggesting I change to Internal Memory. This requires an extra step to clear the message before filming can begin. The Clear button is tiny and hard to see in daylight. This happens every time I wake up the phone - not just when I launch the app. An annoyance when I'm hurrying to capture some action It's coz you have a *cheap* SD card. Buy a Class 10 one. It can't keep up with the bitrate required for 4K video. It's telling you that because you're ignoring it, and it's a problem. - notifications now appear on the locked screen and you get rid of them by swiping upwards (as before). But now this is the only swiping direction to unlock the phone - you can't swipe sideways. It's awkward when I am holding the phone sideways for taking videos and have carefully positioned my fingers to keep them out of the picture You get rid of notifications on the lockscreen by swiping them sideways. Alternatively, go under "Security" in the Settings and turn them off. Easy. - now there is no dedicated "Volume" setting, just sliders for Media, Alarms and Ringtone (plus the external volume rocker). Guess which of those 3 sliders handles text message arrival? Media. The last thing I want is the phone producing sound when I'm checking a video recording so I really want the media volume turned right down - but that kills text message notification. Together with the effect of the external volume rocker, it's easy for me to miss text messages because the volume is accidentally turned down Not true. Media handles music playback. SMS is the "ringer" volume. Check you've not put it in to Priority mode or similar instead. - they also can't get it right what a "notification" is. Sometimes it is just the system messages at the top of the screen. Sometimes it means text messages. Sometimes it means when anything arrives on the phone - but not voice calling! Their handling of sound is a bit of a mess quite frankly Yeah you've definitely messed up Priority notifications. - there used to be a button to "Close All" - to kill everything I've opened. Very convenient. But Lollipop has got rid of that. Now I can only close individual apps one at a time by tapping the 'x' on each one. Worse, the 'x' doesn't appear straight away - there is a 1 - 2 second delay (and if you hit it too early you open the app) The reason being you don't need to kill the apps, in fact you're making it worse. Android is based off Linux which has very good memory management. Don't kill the apps, you're not helping: lifehacker.com Edit: This also sums it up very well too: www.droid-life.com

2015-04-29 20:30:00 | lollipop slowed down my 2012 nexus 7 and I had to apply a bunch of speed tweaks I found with google to make it smooth again. Works really well on my note 3 but thanks to Samsung looks completely different. Change for the sake of it annoys me, giving things a new appearance is fine but moving or renaming settings so you have to go looking for them is irritating. Mostly once these annoyances are dealt with I find lollipop pretty nice. Slower hardware with less RAM like the nexus 7 may struggle with it however. Sometimes after an update you end up needing to do a factory reset to get the device working properly again also.

2015-04-29 23:38:00 | The upgrade to Lollipop on my N4 was an unmitigated disaster (pretty much nothing worked or worked reliably) and I had to do a factory reset and start from scratch to get it working. That said, once I had reinstalled and set everything up again it was just fine. Google seemed to get the upgrade for my N7 (2013) right and that went with no issues (as did the most recent upgrade to 5.1). But I now have an N6 which I am finding a dream to use. Finding my way around can be a challenge at times and there are definitely some things Google could have done better... Like the fact that my work email account (an Exchange account) is now accessed via the Gmail app, which just feels wrong. I have recently downloaded Outlook for Android and now want to removed the "double-get" having both these apps handling my Exchange account. But do you think I can find a way to remove just the Exchange account from Gmail without affecting my other email accounts?!?!

2015-04-30 00:48:00 | I'm uber chuffed with the device I got this morning - having read a multitude of reviews and opinions a semi-consensus was that the internal memory of 8GB's was too limited to upgrade to Lollipop. However this gadget I received has double that, as advertised by my supplier, ie 16 gigs. I mean, having gone from an old handset with 4 gigs including the space on the SD card, means I've already quadrupled the memory capacity. Still looking forward to trying the PlolliPlop o/s

2015-04-30 02:18:00 | Go in to Android Settings --> Accounts, you can remove it there. Aha. And the trick is to press and hold the account, after which the option to remove can be accessed! Another odd change made in Lollipop!! :D Thanks EDIT: Or maybe it's because I am unfamiliar - I don't remove accounts very often
