| 1399318 | 2015-04-25 09:01:00 | Can anyone recomend a good reasonably priced GPS/SatNav unit currently available in this country. I have started looking but but there are so many. I am assuming the cheaper ones are good until they are out of date, then you replace them. While the dearer ones can be updated. Don't need bluetooth or wifi. |

As for price, I think there is a fairly even spread across the board with no single GPS device being that much better than another. | Webdevguy (17166) | ||

Plenty of models come with free updates for a year or even lifetime as well. One feature I did like that a smartphone doesn't seem to have is the speed limit indicator the tomtom had. A smartphone is a good option though as it can cost a similar amount, has free updates, and can be used as a phone. Also the Navfree app is pretty good if you don't want to use data as it downloads the maps onto the phone, great if you drive out of cellphone coverage also. I prefer google maps but I keep navfree as a backup. |

But it's not a big deal, you ignore those confused bits, once you get to the next bit it recognises, it adjusts and resumes telling you anyway.... |

The other reason I prefer GPS on my phone over the nav man is the way you put your destination address into the nav man which is city, suburb, street, street number. That defies normal logic which google maps uses which is street number, street, suburb, city.. Aka the normal way you search for an address. |

| 1399324 | 2015-04-25 22:39:00 | Thanks for the replies. I have a early Navman, been a good unit but well out of date now. Also have a Uniden iGO500 with a 5'' screen, dated around 2008. I'm told it can be updated but it's hard to see in daylight. Even tried mounting it lower down but didn't help. I also have 3 mobile phones that could be used but all have small screens. So I'm looking at buying either a new mobile with a larger screen or a GPS unit. I had been holding off buying one, thinking that our next vehicle would come with a factory navagation system. But the one we decided on dosent have one. |

| 1399325 | 2015-04-25 22:46:00 | We have got a Navman in one car and a Tomtom in the other. Both are good, but the Tomtom has free maps. You need to learn the quirks and foibles of each, but after this they are a breeze to use, though the Navman touchscreen can be a bit pernickety. The actual direction functions and voice instructions of both are excellent. The main advantage the Tomtom has is a larger 6 inch screen, better for aging eyes! The Navman remained as it was for several years, but the only time we noticed this was when using the Taupo bypass which it knew nothing about. For driving in Auckland when we visit, I would NOT be without one of these devices. My father would have thought it was black magic! | Richard (739) | ||
