1408200 2015-09-15 08:54:00 But Mr and Mrs Jo average are no longer buying them (or upgrading them) Wanna bet - over the last couple of months I've built and supplied more Desktop PC's than laptops. 20+ desktops compared to 3 Laptops. wainuitech (129)
1408201 2015-09-15 09:34:00 dugimodo, yea me a newbie with a failing memory like my current PC Rig, I said " could go back to the days about 7 year ago when I got my first computer", that is incorrect as it was 2004 when I lived in Epsom, Auckland and I scavenged the computer from inorganics on the roadside. I have no shame and no knowledge of computers at all. But I learned how to use it, and learned more, and was a hawk for rescuing computers from roadsides and getting CPU's/RAM all the hardware, HDD's PSU's ATA cables, the lot...and tinkering with them. Learning about things, FSB's and CPU clockspeeds, Graphics cards, the lot. And today I know a good bit but am still a NooBy. The beat goes on. Cheers kioti (17360)
1408202 2015-09-15 10:29:00 1101, interesting info from both the links you supplied, and showing PC Builds others have using the Mobo and CPU's I am considering. and as you say it does come down to $$$$. I have $1500 to spend and would like to have $3000 or more so I am looking for the best I can get for what i have. I could step down from the GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 R5 REV 1.0 AMD 990FX SB950 AM3+ DDR3 PCI-E and the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 AM3+ Motherboard to a lesser board such as the ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0 AM3+ which has a few less USB ports on it but is only $190, $60 and $130 cheaper respectively compared to $250 for the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 R5 and $320 for the Asus ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0,
All still leave me in the PCI-E2 Graphics card realm and the jump to getting a PCI-E3 card is a backward compatible move leaving me to look at the Once were Warriors or a couple year back.
I looked at specs for both the Intel CPU.s benchmark tested against the AMD Vishera 8350 and the prices of them.
The INTEL HASWELL CORE I5 4690 3.50GHZ 6MB LGA1150 84W TDP
www.computerlounge.co.nz $399.95, I compared to the AMD FX6300 VISHERA 3.5/4.1GHZ 14MB BLACK EDITION 95W TDP,,,which is/was a gutsy little performer and can be OC'd to near 5GHz without much stress put on it.
www.computerlounge.co.nz $179.95
and also looked at the INTEL SKYLAKE CORE I5-6600 3.30GHZ, 6MB, LGA1151 PROCESSOR 65W TDP
www.computerlounge.co.nz $389.95
Now the AMD FX8350 VISHERA 4.0/4.2GHZ 16MB BLACK EDITION 125W TDP
www.computerlounge.co.nz $289.95 could be overlooked for the FX6300 VISHERA 3.5/4.1GHZ 14MB BLACK EDITION 14MB 95W
Hmmmmmm.....food for thought...cheers.

1408203 2015-09-15 10:49:00 I'm pretty sure nothing has maxed out the bandwidth on a gen 2 pci-e slot yet (given these results: www.pugetsystems.com) icow (15313)
1408204 2015-09-15 19:08:00 But with the huge move to mobile phones and note pads, the sales of desktops and therefore mboards and chips must be slowing.
Ok they will always be needed for companies and gaming etc.
But Mr and Mrs Jo average are no longer buying them (or upgrading them)

In replying to my own post, what i meant to say that was with a slowdown in sales of desktops, the need and incentive for Intel and AMD to keep spending so much on R&D to make faster PC's will decline.

1408205 2015-09-15 20:21:00 Not really, it's a little like race cars. No one actually buys them but the technology trickles down to the ones they do. The improvements in CPUs that make them more efficient for a tablet or phone scales up or down, meaning it allows for faster desktop CPUs as well as more efficient tablet ones. Intels focus has been on efficient CPUs for a while now, yet each generation of desktop CPU has also been a slight improvement is IPC over the last. The focus on R&D has shifted, but we still get improvements across the board. dugimodo (138)

Wow, you're doing alright in sales then.

But never mind laptops, tablets and phones are re[placing PCs.......I see it with my friends.
Even my brother now owns an old Ipad, and he's on that quite a lot.

Well said.
Many people are giving up on desktops AND Laptops, as they are just too hard to maintain.

But I wont be I love my desktop and big monitors and keyboard.

1408208 2015-09-19 00:54:00 First I would look at ASRock motherboards, their support is very good, ASUS's isn't. Second I would go with 8gb of RAM, unless you're doing video work you don't need 16gb. Third I would stay low on your video card as the next generation will be coming out in the spring with better hardware implementation of DX12. Last I would look on YouTube for videos on computer builds at different prices. BrotherDragon (10117)
1408209 2015-10-01 02:04:00 BrotherDragon, thanks for that info on staying low on graphics card as new ones released in Spring. Also the suggestion to stay with 8GB RAM, I do video work sometimes and 16GB would be great for that, as for gaming well 16GB is well OTT for that. As for Graphics card I decided I would get one as opposed to 2 to use in Crossfire, I was going to get 2x ASUS STRIX-GTX950-DC2-2GD5....$300 ea but have opted to get just the one, a ASUS STRIX-GTX970-DC2OC-4GD5 ....$630, and change to getting a mobo that will run a INTEL SKYLAKE CORE I5-6600 3.30GHZ, 6MB, LGA1151 PROCESSOR or INTEL SKYLAKE CORE I5-6600K 3.50GHZ, 6MB, LGA1151, $390 and $410 respectively. Mobo choice?? ASUS H170M-PLUS INTEL H170, DDR4, MATX, LGA1151 (6 SATA) at $229 or ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING INTEL Z170, DDR4, ATX, LGA1151 (4SATA) at $350. or Gigabyte/Evga that will run the I5-6600 and have PCIE-3 and DDR4..............RAM will be Corsair (CMK16GX4M4A2800C16B) 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 2800MHz Vengeance LPX ...(or just 8GB of it )
Decisions....
Thanks
