1399633 2015-04-30 02:54:00 I initially was annoyed the samsung E-mail app removed the option to select whole days of E-mail to delete etc but it's the same - you press and hold the bar with the day on it and the option appears. dugimodo (138)
1399634 2015-04-30 04:08:00 Thanks Chilling - you've got some good ideas there

Turn off the auto-backup. It's probably keeping your phone awake trying to upload 4K video to G+

That sort of fits. Even if not actually uploading it might be indexing or re-coding for a future upload opportunity

It's coz you have a *cheap* SD card. Buy a Class 10 one

I have to disagree with you on this one. According to A1 Bench (a great app BTW) my card does R = 43 MB/s, W = 16 MB/s.

Using Mediainfo on the 4k files recorded by the phone shows a video bit rate of 7 MB/s (56 Mbps) - which is less than half of what the card is capable of (and I have never had a 4k problem in several hours of recording)

Also, I understand that "Class 10" only means that the card can handle HD video. I don't know what that is in terms of bit-rate but it might be only 1 MB/s. The camera experts tell me to forget about labels such as Class 10 and go solely on speed. The particular 32 GB micro-SD card I am using is Strontium Nitro 70 MB/s 466x UHS-1. JB Hifi sells it for about $34

You get rid of notifications on the lockscreen by swiping them sideways

I don't mind notifications. It's the requirement for a certain kind of swipe *to unlock the phone* that I don't like

Media handles music playback. SMS is the "ringer" volume.
Check you've not put it in to Priority mode or similar instead... Yeah you've definitely messed up Priority notifications.

I've now found Interruptions and set Texts to priority - thanks (And I have also turned off "priority"!)

you don't need to kill the apps... Android is based off Linux which has very good memory management... you're not helping:

You might be right. I only do it out of habit to simplify things

1399635 2015-04-30 04:33:00 Class 10 specifies a minimum write speed of 10 MB/s that's what the 10 means. Class 10 cards tend to exceed it by varying amounts dependant on brand & quality but that's the minimum to use the Class 10 logo. en.wikipedia.org If yours doesn't call itself class 10 it does not mean it doesn't qualify though, the speeds you mention are fast enough easily and manufacturers don't have to use the class rating. dugimodo (138)
1399636 2015-04-30 05:00:00 Maybe you can help me Chill. In the Walkman app, Search no longer finds music. I could put in "Dusk" for the song Dusk baby and get no results. It used to work. Ta in advance. Ken kenj (9738)
1399637 2015-04-30 06:06:00 Not entirely sure Ken, I don't use Walkman, I only use Google Play Music. I pay monthly for all the music I can eat.

Class 10 SD Card means a minimum of 10MB/sec sustained transfer (80mbps). Where 1080p video from Cellphones usually peaks at around 15-18mbps, you're likely to find 4K video will peak up to 70mbps (As it should) depending on the quality of the compression, motion etc.
Class 6 means 6MB/sec, which is insufficient for recording HD video, coz your SD Card is only rated at 48mbps, so rightfully the Cellphone will complain (IF you had a Class 6 - which you've mentioned you don't)

If your camera guy tells you to ignore class specifications, he's a monkey, they literally just mean "Can sustain this in MB/sec in transfer rate".
Same goes for a "UHS" class card. UHS 1 means 10MB/sec (Same as Class 10, which you have) or UHS3 means "30MB/sec" (240mbps).

Alternatively just grab an alternative camera app if you really don't like the notification. Mine did that in Kitkat as well as Lollipop on my Z3.

Also, you can change the Lockscreen, part of the beauty of Android is if you don't like that Lockscreen, you can replace it! :)

1399638 2015-05-02 05:37:00 OK, I've put the advice into practise and today tried it out.

The good news is that I was able to film 40 minutes continuously on 4k without any "getting hot" warnings. The filming was in 12 segments, the longest 17 minutes. (The total came to 22 GB) This was a lot better than in the past

Then we had lunch and I checked battery usage - Google+ didn't register

After lunch we fluffed around a bit and drove home for an hour or so and I could feel my pocket burning all the way. I checked battery usage and found that Google+ was now at 10%! As much as Screen and Camera combined

The screenshot shows it all. The steep bit is the 4k shooting. The lesser slope is (presumably) Google+ doing something. The red bit at the end is USB charging while I'm uploading the files. (I note also that the Google+ bar length is only 77% of the correct length, if "correct" is measured by the other bars at 5%. In other words, there seems to be some cheating)

My guess (and I emphasise it's only a guess) is that Google+ doesn't want 4k files so converts them to HD on the phone. (I have cellular data turned off and of course no Wifi in the car)

Possible evidence for this is that File Commander shows about 7 GB usage on the SD card on the bar graph although it reports only 0.1 GB in words (after I have uploaded the files to my computer and deleted them from the phone). In other words, it stores the HD files next to the originals but doesn't report them because if you really want to use that space it lets you over-write them

Chill, thanks for those links about memory usage. I see now why not to force close. However, it seems that closing an app by pressing the 'X' on the tab does not force the app closed - it only gets rid of it from the list. I found this out by checking the Apps menu and finding "Force close" still available (not greyed out)

1399639 2015-05-03 09:06:00 It still closes them though ;) Slightly different with what it does but yeah.

Check your Auto-backup settings, make sure it's set to "WiFi-Only"? Wonder if it's trying to upload them, failing, getting bored, then trying again a few minutes later or something?
