1399509 2015-04-29 11:57:00 Haven't had any slowdowns yet, Xnet VDSL unlimited just works fine. R2x1 (4628)
1399510 2015-04-29 21:20:00 No speed reduction here either yet, ADSL2 only as no alternative of any kind in this village. Snap ISP gary67 (56)
1399511 2015-04-29 23:36:00 No slow downs on our fibre here at work, in fact we've increased in speed. :D
Now on 200/200 plan!
And yes I do use it at night a lot since I seem to be here more than I am at home.

And there's the reason, right there .

Congestion occurs where lots of people are trying to use the same service .

Because you live in the wopwops :D, there is little or no contention for the service . . . .

Your DSLAM is probably one of the lighter loaded ones around the country, whereas mine is probably just about at full capacity . Maybe it's time for me to think about moving out of Auckland .

1399513 2015-04-29 23:52:00 It doesn't take a whole lot to load up a Conklin. Alex B (15479)

Very true - but Conklin speeds are pretty crap anyway. Thank goodness their numbers around the country are falling (not fast enough though)...

1399515 2015-04-30 00:19:00 It's possible to get 8 Mbps out of a conklin.... if you are the only one using it and it has the maximum backhaul connections :devil :p

In any case a conklin is a cheap solution to get better than dial-up service to remote locations and admittedly not up to modern broadband standards. Replacing them is not very economic in a lot of cases so who knows when they'll invest the money.

I suspect they will continue to fade away as UFB is rolled out - but it will be a few years yet...

1399517 2015-04-30 06:36:00 I support the call for all ISP's to abolish unlimited data plans :2cents:

Why? What they should do is prioritise the other plans over the unlimited ones, if there actually is a bandwidth issue. I never had much of a problem with Go Large or Big Time in that respect. A couple of times it annoyed me, but overall I was happier with an unlimited cap than having top speed all the time.

That said, I'm currently on Telecom VDSL with a cap, and have yet to notice any download speed issues. Or maybe I'm just not downloading at the right (wrong?) time...

1399518 2015-04-30 12:26:00 From what I'm seeing, this isn't an issue caused by ISPs, but rather by the backhaul. This is affecting basically anything going over Chorus kit. ISP's can't "prioritize" this out. Chilling_Silence (9)
