1408180 2015-09-11 00:48:00 ]Hi, I am planning building a more modern PC. Currently the Rig I have is Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 FK rev4 AM3 (938)/AMD Athlon II x4 630 2.8 GHz OC 3.121 GHZ Stable/ 4GB Adata DDR2 800MHz/ Onboard Graphics Radeon 2100/ PSU Coolermaster RS-550-PCAR E3 (550W)/ HDD's: 160GB WD Sata 2 Master. 120GB Samsung IDE ATA, 1TB Seagate Sata2. 2tb Seagate Sata 3. 4TB WD Elements exrenal drive/ HP v216 Wide LCD Monitor/MS USB Keyboard, Genius USB Optical Mouse.
I wanted to increase Memory to 8GB but trying to get any DDR2 800/1066MHz is nigh on impossible.
This new PC will still be behind the times but I will be moving up to DDR3 Ram.
Initially I wanted to use a AMD FX9370 Vishera 4.4/4.7Ghz Black Edition 16MB Cache Socket AM3+ and get a mobo such as Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 R5 Rev 1.0 AMD 990FX SB950 AM3+ DDR3 or the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 AM3+ But as the Vishera is 220W the Mobo's will only run CPU up to 140W.
Looking at other CPU options I have the AMD FX8350 Vishera 4.0/4.2Ghz Black Edition 16MB Cache Socket AM3+ or the Vishera 8320, both are 125W.
Looking at other options for a mobo I have Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P AMD 970 SB950 AM3+ DDR3, ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 ATX AM3+ or ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0 AM3+
Memory will be either 16GB of Corsair CMD16GX3M2A1866C9 Dominator Platinum 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3-1866 CL9 or CORSAIR CMY16GX3M2A1866C9B VENGEANCE PRO
Graphics card either EVGA GEFORCE GTX950 FTW 2GB GDDR5 ACX2.0 PCI-E3.0 (PSU 350W) or ASUS STRIX-GTX960-DC2OC-2GD5 GEFORCE GTX960 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E3.0 (120W TDP). Both are PCI-E3 going into a PCI-E2 mobo. (forget the new 12GB DDR5 cards ...for now )
So, I could look for a decent PCI-E2 card (or two)
If I need to raise PSU a few W then I will get the COOLERMASTER VS-SERIES V750S 750W MODULAR POWER SUPPLY

Now I am tossing up between the items and I have a fancy for this set of items:
FX8350 Vishera 4.0/4.2Ghz Black Edition 16MB Cache Socket AM3+,
ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0 AM3+
CORSAIR CMY16GX3M2A1866C9B VENGEANCE PRO
Those 3 items will cost me $230.00+$280.00+$230.00 = $740.00

Graphics card undecided as yet but looking at $350-$400 ($229.95....ASUS R7360-OC-2GD5 AMD RADEON R7 360 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E3.0 ??).....and if needs be then I will get the COOLERMASTER VS-SERIES V750S 750W PSU. ($230.00)

Any suggestions/opinions welcomed.
Thank you.

1408181 2015-09-11 02:17:00 Just a slight correction :

I wanted to increase Memory to 8GB but trying to get any DDR2 800/1066MHz is nigh on impossible . Its easy to get, BUT because the Motherboard described only has two DIMM slots, that's the problem .

DDR2 / 800 is available but generally only in 2GB Modules, and if both slots are full then there's no room to expand .

I purchase it all the time from one of my suppliers . Doing a quick Search on public stores Though - example on Ascent . ascent . co . nz/productspecification . aspx?itemID=360043" target="_blank">www . ascent . co . nz

Any suggestions/opinions welcomed While its good there's information provided, sometimes many people will simply ignore it, to much info can lead to confusion and many people cant be bothered working through the information overload . ( others love that sort of thing . )

Just a couple of questions
1 . Got a budget - if so roughly how much ?
2 . Whats the Usage ? - No point in wasting money on a high spec Computer if all that going to be done is general work, email and playing online games on Facebook :p

1408184 2015-09-12 23:35:00 I wouldn't run a coolermaster PSU personally, they are ok but it's the most important part of the build and you should get a decent one.
Use a tool like this one outervision.com to figure out what you actually need, add a little headroom for added saftey or growth and then chose a PSU accordingly.
For example if I choose the most power hungry of your choices and add a couple of guesses (9370, 16GB, GTX960, 3 x HDDs, optical drive) It recommends 502W, based on that I personally would choose this one www.computerlounge.co.nz As for the rest of your choices, answer Wainui's two questions and we'll have a better Idea.

Are you set on using AMD? an i5 would use half the power for a similar performance level (depending on what you use it for).

1408185 2015-09-13 05:30:00 What's the purpose of the PC?

Edit: Also rev4 of the GA-990FXA-UD3 supports the 9590.

Wainuitech, absolutely correct about the DDR2 800/1066MHz being easy to get and my mobo only having 2 DIMM slots and DDR2 800 being available in 2GB sticks, what I failed to say was that I wanted to get 2x4GB sticks of RAM to get the 8GB I want. I can't find any 4GB DDR2 800/1066 sticks available from any of the online stores such as Computer Lounge, Dragon Computers or even Trade me. However, they can be obtained from overseas traders such as Ebay.
Budget I have is minimum $NZ800-1200
Usage will be to Digital Media, running Adobe CS6 MC Premier Pro, editing HD movies, using the computer as a Home Theatre and going HDMI to my TV, ability to play the new games that require DX12 and also to maybe play a bit of Criminal Case on FB and send/reademails....but that I can do using this computer I am using. Hence the wish for the 8GB of DDR2 RAM.......Firefox and Adobe Flash player are now chewing up 800MB-900MB of the 4GB Memory I have.

1408188 2015-09-14 23:48:00 apsattv, thanks I have already looked at pc part picker, no 4GB DDR2 800/1066MHz sticks of RAM there. kioti (17360)
1408189 2015-09-14 23:59:00 dugimido, cheers. I usually look at Computer Lounge to checkout parts I want. Yes I am set on using AMD. Here is a link to a AMD vs Intel Battle Royale. www.anandtech.com
