Has anyone had any experience with broadband from World-net.co.nz. They have very good national & international phone rates but does their broadband match their phone rates?
Thanks

I've been with World-net for some years now and have no complaints.

If you have a specific question I might be able to answer?

497753 2006-11-09 21:55:00 Hi Brig
I see a lot of comments about customer service and speeds which are quite a lot lower than one would expect from some some broadband suppliers so the questions I have are, is the customer service okay and are speeds good (I know this is dependent on a number of things) but in general do you get slowing down or disconnection etc?

Thanks for this
Nick

497754 2006-11-10 04:11:00 I am on World-net's GO 3.5M 30G.

As far as I have experienced, their customer service is more than adequate. Their staff are mostly Korean and you need to be a little patient with the limited English at times. I've seldom needed to contact them....mostly account matters, and they are polite and keen to help.

Disconnects are very rare, are episodic and seem to happen early morning (7.30-8am) for a few minutes only.

Speed is adequate for two of us sharing the same connection networked with fairly steady use. I just did a NZDSL speed test (at 3.35 pm) and got 659 kbs down and 74 kbs up which is pretty meaningless because my wife is hogging things on the net somewhat right now. ( I think she's sending a long letter of condolence to G W Bush and friends )

I haven't got any average or typical speed test figures to give you as I haven't been doing much checking.

I have not seen any sign of traffic shaping or whatever else goes on, but then maybe I wouldn't spot it even if they did it.

497755 2006-11-10 09:31:00 Woa!! - I hope your wife had a couple movies and a half a dozen mp3's downloading when you done that test - otherwise I would say that is a rather dismal 3.5 megabit connection...
I'm on a 2 M connection with I hug and my result is.. (testing it right now...)
result
Download Speed: 2005 kbps (250.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 131 kbps (16.4 KB/sec transfer rate

a quick google search will bring a number of views that are not as happy with world-net as brig seems to be - an example of a thread at gpforums.co.nz (www.gpforums.co.nz)

I'm leaving world-net this month and I'd strongly recommend against using them. Their international speeds are rubbish, and have been since i joined, peak or off peak they suck

just left too. I think this is a wakeup call for them, the guy on the phone asked why I was leaving and I told them their international speeds sucked arse. I imagine.....
etc etc

Tell me one ISP that has fab international speeds... As compared to speedtests done on nzdsl (new zealand speeds).... I think international speeds drop at least by half....

But anyway, about Worldnet. If you go on their "capped data" plans, and not their unlimited ones they used to have, you'll be all right. Definitely no traffic shaping, P2P blocking, etc.

Internet quality? Well, comparable to most ISPs, I guess.... Up to par with Slingshot, maybe just abit worse than Xnet... But anything seems to be better than Xtra's Go Large for now....

So, if you're up for a relatively cheap and generous plan? I don't really think you'll be frustrated much with Worldnet.... Very "middle of the road"...

Well, like I indicated, I don't pay much regard to transfer rates or latency or traffic shaping etc. I can see how these are big things for anyone who is using online gaming or serious file sharing but I'm more interested in the reliability of the sevice.

For what it's worth, I just did three separate speed tests at different sites. That was at 7.50 - 7.55am today Saturday and while my wife was still doing what she was doing yesterday:

NZDSL - 2641 down
103 up

Ihug site - 1257 down

Xtra site - 2361 down

I have no idea why the ihug test was half the speed of the others.

497758 2006-11-10 22:20:00 I had numerous problems with World-Net, the speeds are pitiful and the service is the worst I have ever encountered. Trying to wade through the terrible english skills soon wears you down especially when you need complicated technical information or advice.
I say don't go anywhere near them, I switched to Xtra and for the most part its been fine.
I won't say its completely trouble free because its not, xtra has its problems, but looking at it logically why give yourself another "3rd" party to go though when it all uses telecom equipment to start with.
Unbundling will take a while till then xtra is the best bet.
