497380 2006-11-07 23:21:00 Hey.

Last night, I found that I had 2 partitions on my HDD (NEC Versa E2000 laptop). One was about 4gb in FAT and hidden, the other my main one of about 34GB in NTFS, so i formated the 4gb partition into NTFS and went to merge it with the big one. when the merging was complete, the computer wouldn't start up, it just gets to the black screen and hangs there. All I can do is enter bios.

I guess the smaller partition had my windows boot files or something. I was wondering how do I repair the big partition so windows would boot again? Without formating the drive.

I can boot from a WinXP cd but it wants me to overwrite my current partition. Or if i go to the recovery console, then I guess I can do "fixmbr" but it gives me some warning about maybe loosing that partition.

Hope someone can help.

497381 2006-11-07 23:25:00 How did u merge them? With something like Partitionmagic? Speedy Gonzales (78)
497382 2006-11-07 23:40:00 yeah I used partition magic. The thing is, the computer worked when i deleted/formated that smaller partition. but then for merging I had to restart the comp, after that restart the computer didn't boot again. WarNox (8772)

Ooops. That was your Recovery partition.
You just killed it.

maybe thats why it was called 'backup'.

so how do I fix it?

497385 2006-11-08 03:25:00 You'll have to reinstall XP, with the XP CD you've got.

Then try and find the drivers needed for the laptop, so the sound etc works.

You can't now. It was an image of your install.

You can reinstall Windows, reinstall all the drivers for everything, install all the bundled software then make a new image with something like Ghost but you can't retrieve the one you wiped.

497387 2006-11-08 05:46:00 this whole concept confuses me. so what was the whole point of that 2nd partition? what did it achieve by being there?

and say i reinstall windows now, what happens to the data on the drive?

thnx again

The point of that other partition was to restore the system back to its original settings etc. As if it were brand new. If you ever had probs with it.

Most systems (if the cd u have didnt come with the laptop), have a hidden partition with the operating system on it. This saves the shop (or whoever u brought the system from, giving u a cd).

If you reformat what u have on it now goes byebyes.

497389 2006-11-08 05:55:00 I see, ok so that was my bad. thats ok, it didn't come with any great programs. But if that was just an image for "just in case" something goes wrong, why doesn't my windows boot now?

Can I not just fix-up the partition I have left now, and therefore keep the data?
