| 497411 | 2006-11-08 08:04:00 | Does the BIOS on your system (and the laptop) support booting from USB devices? If both do: Also, is the flash drive bootable now? Can you boot from it, say for example when u want to flash a BIOS, it boots into DOS? Like a floppy? Copy the files to that flash disk as stated on the last MS site I posted, and hopefully once u do that (so the flash drive can read the NTFS partitions on the laptop), you should be able to boot into XP on the laptop with it. Then once u get into XP on the laptop (hopefully), right mouse on my computer on the desktop / advanced tab / startup and recovery / advanced. Click on edit, see whats there, and see if it matches this [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect (Is SP1 or 2 installed on the laptop)? If it doesnt put the same info above into notepad, and save it. BUT if that doesnt work, then we'll have to think of something else. |

If it does, then yup, it should support booting from USB devices . This would also apply to the pc you're on now . If it shows under the bootable devices, you should be able to select it (if the system supports booting from USB devices), so u can boot from it . As if it were a floppy, or a cd . To see if the USB flash drive is bootable, plug it into a USB on the PC you're on now . (while you're in Windows, it should open) . See whats on it . Most USB flash drives now (if theyre bootable, come with software when u buy it - on a cd), So, you can make it a system / bootable flash drive . If you haven't done this bit, then I would say it isnt bootable yet . And if a flash drive is plugged into a USB port, the name of it should also appear on the post screen . |

| 497414 | 2006-11-08 12:14:00 | This is what I did (to no avail): 1. Made a bootable floopy disk. 2. Formated a 256mb USB drive, making it dos bootable and using files from the floppy disk (in fat mode). 3. made my laptop boot from 'usb devices' first. 4. started the laptop 5. and nothing... i think when i get up tmrw i will just re-install XP. fixing this is beyond me, i got no idea if my laptop motherboard supports booting from usb or if the usb drive is really bootable. and there doesn't seem to be any way of editing the Boot.ini file from Recovery and Repair mode. Lesson learned: Don't delete random partitions on you hard drive :D |
