497400 2006-11-08 06:46:00 yes i checked in bios and the hdd is still there in the boot sequence.

this was how my drive looked like:

--------------------------------------------
| 4gb - the image i deleted| 32gb - main part|
--------------------------------------------

so after my little adventrue i guess it looks like:

--------------------------------------------
38gb - all joined.
--------------------------------------------

i know the merge worked because it says the drive is now 38gb, before it said 32gb. i can look through the C:\Windows folders through the recovery function on the winxp cd. but how do i edit the file? and where is it?

thanks

497401 2006-11-08 06:53:00 Even tho this (support.microsoft.com) may not be related, see if it works in Recovery console. Speedy Gonzales (78)

497404 2006-11-08 07:19:00 This (support.microsoft.com) looks like what you're seeing. Follow the info on this site.

Or maybe this (support.microsoft.com) ?

497405 2006-11-08 07:28:00 If you arent up to editing the &apos ; hidden&apos ; bootini file,

Or you could try overwriting the file with this

;
; font-style:italic ; "> ; Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems.
; font-style:italic ; "> ; Warning: Use BCDEDIT.exe to modify Windows Vista boot options.
;
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=" ; Microsoft Windows XP Professional" ; /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN

save as hidden read only.

Or as a last ditch effort,try a windows repair. You will lose all the administrator settings, but not sure if it will create new &apos ; Administrator&apos ; docs & ; setting folder as it creates a new SID. That will repair the boot file for the single partition.

Hope you used users accounts instead of the administrator account.

497406 2006-11-08 07:37:00 i tried those two links but can't really do much there, except the fixboot and fixmbr, of which i've tried both and neither worked.

yeah i used the admin account, but thats ok, most of the stuff should be backed up.

how do i find and then edit the boot.ini file, and how do i save it as hidden? i cannot find instructions for that anywhere.

497407 2006-11-08 07:44:00 Have u got a bootable floppy that can read NTFS??

As stated here (support.microsoft.com) ?

Make one of these, and you should be able to boot into XP with it.

497408 2006-11-08 07:49:00 buy my laptop doesn't have a floppy drive :confused: WarNox (8772)
497409 2006-11-08 07:54:00 Hmm you could buy one of these (www.dse.co.nz)

If the laptop has USB. Altho it would also help if the laptop supports booting from USB as well.

Whatever you're on now has it got a floppy?

Have you got a USB flash drive? If you have a floppy and a flash drive, you could make the USB flash drive bootable (if your system can boot from USB devices, and do the same thing).
