497390 2006-11-08 06:00:00 I see, ok so that was my bad. thats ok, it didn't come with any great programs. But if that was just an image for "just in case" something goes wrong, why doesn't my windows boot now?

Can I not just fix-up the partition I have left now, and therefore keep the data?

Thats a good question. It may have been when u deleted the 4gb and merged it with the main partition it screwed something up.

I cant see anything saying whether u tried safe mode or not, to see if anything would load. Did u try Safe mode?

497391 2006-11-08 06:03:00 it doesnt let me get far enough to try to get into safe mode. it never says press f8 etc... it goes to the first screen (when i can enter bios) then it comes to a black scree with a "_" flashing in the top left corner. WarNox (8772)

AFAIK it doesnt tell u to press F8 to get to safe mode.

Usually, u hold down F8 to get to the option to select safe mode.

Reboot and hold F8 down, see what happens.

497393 2006-11-08 06:09:00 alright ill try it now and see what happens. but say i get into safe mode, what i can change to make it all work again properly? WarNox (8772)
497394 2006-11-08 06:19:00 Well u could see if everything is still on the hdd, or if u manage to get to the options, see if use last known configuration works?

If you've enabled system restore, if u do manage to get into safe mode, run system restore and go back to before u merged the partitions.

According to the MS Site (www.microsoft.com)

And here (www.microsoft.com)

System restore may work in safe mode.

497395 2006-11-08 06:19:00 cannot get into safe mode, that menu never pops up, i tried holding and tapping the f8 key.

i hate problems which logically make no sense.

I dont think u can do it any other way then .

If the laptop hdd could be connected to a desktop somehow, (i think u can buy an adapter from Dick Smith or something) then u could hook it up get what u want off it, (except programs that have already been installed), then format it .

497397 2006-11-08 06:24:00 what about if i try to 'rewrite master boot', with the fixmbr command, using the winxp cd? WarNox (8772)
497398 2006-11-08 06:33:00 No harm in trying, it's not going to make any diff it it doesnt work .

Something like this ( . dse . co . nz/cgi-bin/dse . storefront/455161670a2a8aaa2740c0a87f99071b/Product/View/XH6905" target="_blank">www . dse . co . nz)

May work, thats if the laptop's hdd is a 2 . 5 hdd .

Umm the main hdd is still the bootdisk in the BIOS isnt it??

Maybe it changed when u merged the partitions?

497399 2006-11-08 06:39:00 Sounds like the boot partition info was wiped/adjusted on the merge. You need to check with a DOS utilitiy diskette that the only partition is the active partition, or check the boot.ini file in windows the check it didnt previously know their was a hiiden partition (which you have now wiped), and is now looking for the 2nd partition to load windows from, which doesnt now exist.
