497313 2006-11-07 21:35:00 My friend turns on their laptop and it says 'No operating system found'

Oh great. Yet if they try restarting it a few times, then it will boot into windows.

It's getting rather annoying, and they want it fixed (obviously).

Any suggestions? What type of info do you need? Cause I don't know.

497314 2006-11-07 21:41:00 Sounds like a wire maybe loose, or something.

Since it still boots into Windows.

It hasnt been dropped previously has it?

497315 2006-11-07 21:48:00 Before I'd go hunting for wiring gremlins, I'd try a Safe Mode boot and see what happens .

In all the years of low and high-voltage repairs, I haven't found much credit to failure via loose wiring that "somehow" works everh now and then . It's possible, mind one, but not likely . :groan:

497316 2006-11-07 21:52:00 Well its either that the hdd isnt the bootdisk in the BIOS, or the hdd is going to die. Speedy Gonzales (78)

If the system cant find the hard drive to boot from booting into Safe Mode wont make any difference . This is a hardware problem not a software problem, thus Safe Mode is completely irrelevant .

Do as Speedy has suggested and make sure the boot order in the BIOS is set correctly . My initial thought is that the hard drive is dying .

497318 2006-11-07 22:04:00 Some years ago I had similar problems and it was eventually diagnosed as the motherboard being cracked. A blob of blue-tack under one corner to close the crack made temporary repairs. Scouse (83)
497319 2006-11-07 22:07:00 The HD is most likely dieing (as already noted)

Backup the data and replace as soon as possible.

Personally I would immediatly remove the HD and ghost the contents onto a new HD, I certainly wouldn't run the system again for any reason.

497322 2006-11-07 22:34:00 why speculate ?.....it's pretty simple to download a harddrive diagnostic progrma from the manufacturer, all of them have them freely available on their website or else you could goto www.seagate.com and get 'seatools' which will run a 'generic' diagnostic if you want.......... drcspy (146)
