498296 2006-11-12 03:21:00 I recently got a new laptop with 60gb in total with 2 drives (c&d). When i first turned on my comp, the c drive started out with 30gb out of 44gb and my d drive had 658mb out of 11gb. ne suggestions y i was missing so much memory? at first i wasnt too concerned wit this. i installed 3 games. 2 of em required 1gb each and the 3rd game only took 130mb. after the games were installed, along with minor programs, i now have 26.5gb out of 44gb well 26.5gb out the 30gb. i am very concerned with the mysterious loss of memory. i scanned the comp and nuthin came up.i went to remove programs, and after removing alot of stuff i only gained about 20mb. i went to properties in the c drive, and i checked the box that said it would compress files and stuff to save disk space. i clcked apply, and then it said it would require 3 days and 11 hours for the effects to take place. after 5 min, it said there was an error and aborted. lastly was i ripped off on my new comp? 44gb and 11gb only makes up 55gb, wheres the last 5gb of my 60gb laptop? i added up al the programs and such and in total it is about 4gb. i still cannot figure out the loss of memory. 498297 2006-11-12 03:49:00 HDD's are not "memory", they are "storage".

RAM is "memory"

However HDD are sold in "decimal" GB, Windows only reports in "Binary" GB (1.024*1.024*1.024)

So a 60 GB HDD will be reported in Windows as between 55 and 56 GB. The reporting is correct for your 60 GB drive. It has always been like that with HDD makers size and Windows reported size.

498298 2006-11-12 04:17:00 So ur basically saying 30gb out of 44gb and in a c drive and 658mb out of 11gb in the d drive is normal when u open a brand new laptop that has never been turned before? TheMoneyLover (11441)
498299 2006-11-12 04:21:00 What I am saying is that 55 GB reported in Windows is correct for a 60GB HDD.

As to what is on the HDD partitions we cannot comment. You have full access to the laptop and we don't, so you should be able to determine what is taking up the space by viewing all files, including hidden and system files.

New? Compress? What O/S is on it? I haven't seen compression on WinXP, only omn older versions of WIndows.

The smaller partition should be your recovery partition, leave it alone.
The other one is your main partition and would have at least had WIndows on it and probably a few other apps and junk, even when bought new. So of course it isn't going to be completely empty.

498301 2006-11-12 17:23:00 any suggestions on how to find hidden files? im guessing they arent too hard to find due to the large capicaity of memory they take up. TheMoneyLover (11441)
498302 2006-11-12 18:56:00 Never mind, i just read the box of my laptop. it said it had 12gb of harddrive storage... TheMoneyLover (11441)
