2006-11-11 18:03:00 | HijackThis Tutorial - How to use HijackThis to remove Browser Hijackers & Spyware (www.bleepingcomputer.com) R3 is for a Url Search Hook. An Url Search Hook is used when you type an address in the location field of the browser, but do not include a protocol such as or ftp: in the address. When you enter such an address, the browser will attempt to figure out the correct protocol on its own, and if it fails to do so, will use the UrlSearchHook listed in the R3 section to try to find the location you entered. Looks like that entry should be removed especially considering it is located in the System32 directory. Have you also been using other anti-malware applications in conjunction with HJT to scan the computer? Ewdio (now part of AVG Anti-Spyware) (www.ewido.net) has a one month free trial and is very good. Spybot Search & Destroy is another very good application.

2006-11-11 19:12:00 | How do you mean "however every time i remove all trojans and spyware more seems to pop up"? are you saying that there has been trojans on there before? did it have any A/V software before you installed <cringe> Norton <shudder> ? There are many other free A/V scanners out there that are not a resource hog, such as AVG, Avast to name two, I have used both of these and they are good. | The_End_Of_Reality (334) | |
2006-11-11 19:42:00 | yes ran spybot and adware plus now has norton, however every time i remove all trojans and spyware more seems to pop up . Disconnect it from the net . Run them all again in Safe Mode . When its clean, install a 3rd party firewall BEFORE you connect back to the net . They don't just appear from nowhere . . . .

There are many other free A/V scanners out there that are not a resource hog, such as AVG, Avast to name two, I have used both of these and they are good. she had norton on it but it expired so my sister removed it then let the teens onto myspace and utube, i spent about 5 hours on 10/29 removing all problems i found and installed norton a/v 2005 on her computer since i just upgraded to norton 07 computer worked for couple of days then she got popups again from something called vdadd-in i searched for how to remove which she did and now she said everytime she turns on computer she gets popups agian. comp is about 5 years old and only has 256megs of ram so it took about 3 hours for norton to run on it due to large amount of files. so i suggested she save her pics and documents and we do a system restore since there are a couple of other problems with computer. howver i am going to upgrade memory as soon as i find store that still carries pc133 as that is what it takes. other problem is that computer still running xp sp1. she has dsl with earthlink and i think she did download a firewall from them as well as popup blocker. |

2006-11-11 23:25:00 | so i suggested she save her pics and documents and we do a system restore since there are a couple of other problems with computer. she has dsl with earthlink and i think she did download a firewall from them as well as popup blocker. Burning all of the files to CD and then doing a System Restore won't do much good if a piece of malware has implanted itself in one of your documents. Try to get the system clean first. Instead if using Earthlink's firewall I would reccomend using Zone Alarm. You said before the the teens went onto MySpace and You Tube. I would think that you wouldn't get any spyware from those places as they are quite repetuatble but you never know. You could be getting spyware from anyware. I would reccomend following the steps listed on this page (www.geekstogo.com) on the computer help website Geeks To Go. After you have done that you can post your HiJack This log here or on the Geeks To Go forums. I hope this has been of help, tell us how it all goes. ~Matt :)
