497993 2006-11-11 04:44:00 Gas mains? Telecom? You have me intrigued...

My old gas pipes have never been excavated from the road outside (or removed from my ceiling cavity by my ancestors, for that matter) and Telecom's lines definitely run overhead.

But more to the point, when Telecom did put the phone lines underground in Pitt St - for aesthetic reasons ... ahem - they dug up the footpath instead.

Was Dunedin given the chance to enter this broadband challenge thing, gibler?
I never heard of it.
But what do I know...

Yep, sold for $1. I imagine they want them solely to stop any competition getting them.

497994 2006-11-11 06:38:00 ...Mayor Garry Moore is expected to announce the city has a new broadband network with speeds up to a thousand times faster than is currently available...

Are there any more details on this at the moment?

Sorry but I have not seen/read any thing more about this.

Maybe try contacting your council & ask them?

497997 2006-11-11 09:08:00 Theirs a big write up about it in saturdays press in the business section.

The council are laying the cable in the city only for the moment and will expand as demand grows, this is all fibre optic cable and it is all their own network no telecom involved. The cost to start with is $2million.The speeds will be capable of 10 yes 10 gigabits a second.

If you want for info on this read todays paper or ring the council.

497998 2006-11-11 10:39:00 Auckland has no money for broadband but will be building the ridiculous bedpan stadium, talk about short term profit winning over long term planning. The last thing that NZ needs is another stadium.

Well actually it just needs one world class stadium seating 50,000 people in order to host the Rugby world cup in 2011.

So no need for a contribution from the Auckland ratepayers, or from the rest of NZ. :D

498000 2006-11-12 02:25:00 And no world class sporting events for New Zealand ever. These things cost money, but bring in a lot more. The NZRU are underwriting the costs of the entire tournament and the government did guarantee to the NZRU and IRB that it would fund a new or upgraded stadium.
Personally I'd like to see User Pays applying across all facets of government other than Education and Healthcare, but so long as it's not I want my new stadium.
How's that for a threadjacking?
