498045 2006-11-10 22:05:00 Just curious. Telecom tell us that speed is goverened by how busy the lines are.
If this is the case, why can I always (and I mean always), download from Microsoft.com at speeds between 300 and 400 kbs.(or whatever they are), and yet other sources may be as slow as dial up speed.

498046 2006-11-10 22:31:00 It maybe the time of day u download from the MS site, like its when I tried the Leadtek site which is in Taiwan I think.

It didnt matter when I tried to get the update for the PVR program it was slow as lol.

In the end it took me from 9.30 pm or thereabouts till 5.10 am the next morning to download a 32 mb file lol, which was pretty damn ridiculous.

And I had to use Firefox, as Opera and IE kept on stopping. And I wasnt going to hang around for 7-8 hrs resuming it all the time.

FF did the same thing but before it got down to zero (and stopped) it somehow managed to keep it going till it finished.

A site may also go slow, depending on how many users are on it (and downloading files), at the same time as you.

But in Leadtek's case, I think their site is slow as hell naturally, with or without other people downloading files.

498047 2006-11-10 22:44:00 Maybe some ISP's have Internet cache for popular sites, so when you download those frequently downloaded things, you may be actually downloading from the cache. It is just my guess :) developer (4447)

I have a Leadtek graphic card too . Happy with the design and quality  Suffer their downloads . . . :( Lucky if WinFox can finish driver updating in an hour . . . normally have to retry several times .

Nope, these are the tuners not the graphic card/s. I had to update the PVR for the tuner on this, coz even tho the program worked, it crashed when I tried to record in MPEG 2 format, at least the latest version of the PVR program works.

Another annoying feature is u haveta install the PVR program in safe mode, otherwise it crashes after u install it and run it.

Most probably coz of the AV or the firewall program running in the background.

These are ASUS video cards, and thankfully the drivers for these are on CD lol. I wont be updating the videocard drivers anytime soon, as the last time I updated them I had to reconfigure them all the time, so video out worked.

And everytime I saved the settings they didnt work / save.

With the drivers on the CD, that came with them, at least once u set whatever, and save the settings, they stay put.

498050 2006-11-11 01:25:00 Leadtek's site is just a joke. I've looked for vid card drivers a few times, but have given up. I don't have the patience to wait hours when I can get NVidia drivers in minutes.

And I usualy do my downloading at about 4 am. So they can't blame our overloaded lines for that.

498051 2006-11-11 01:35:00 Yup, well if its a Nvidia based card, Nvidia drivers shouldnt be a prob .

I used to have Nvidia based cards on these, but the later versions of the drivers got crappier, and crashed more often . So they went in the bin, and I changed to ATI cards instead .

498052 2006-11-11 17:23:00 re download speeds it does seem that microsoft run pretty fast servers but if you try to download from HP for example they're very slow in comparison. Although your download speed is somewhat dependant on the local conditions here with phone lines/telecom etc its also dependant on the local conditions at the ''other end''..... AND even then theres other servers etc in the sytsem before you get the files...... drcspy (146)
498053 2006-11-12 21:10:00 I have the same experience as JJJJJ. MS downloads are as quick as, 300-400KB/sec but elsewhere i'm lucky to get 20-30 for a lot of things. My connection has definitely slowed in the last month since Telecom have "upgraded" everyones connection at the exchange. autechre (266)
