| 497984 | 2006-11-10 09:47:00 | Here is a more in depth article here: computerworld.co.nz The reason Auckland missed out is at the bottom of the article: Auckland City failed in its joint bid, with the regional council, for Broadband Challenge cash. It was notified earlier this year that it had not fulfilled all the necessary criteria and was unable to modify its plans in time as negotiation among six councils was required. Sounds like the usual problem of bungling, fumbling Auckland councils that goofed yet again. |

| 497986 | 2006-11-10 09:58:00 | Auckland has no money for broadband but will be building the ridiculous bedpan stadium, talk about short term profit winning over long term planning. The last thing that NZ needs is another stadium. Get all those monkeys out of Auckland City Council would be a good start. So much for NZ being at the cutting edge of future technology, we can't even give DSL to the average citizen at a reasonable price. |

| 497991 | 2006-11-10 12:48:00 | Hmmm, I wish Dunedin would do something like this. But I hear the council sold the old gas mains to ....... Telecom  Gas mains? Telecom? You have me intrigued... My old gas pipes have never been excavated from the road outside (or removed from my ceiling cavity by my ancestors, for that matter) and Telecom's lines definitely run overhead. But more to the point, when Telecom did put the phone lines underground in Pitt St - for aesthetic reasons ... ahem - they dug up the footpath instead. Was Dunedin given the chance to enter this broadband challenge thing, gibler? I never heard of it. But what do I know... |
