A client is running a competition for her customers to design her sites new logo/banner and she has asked me about Font Copyright

And I hate to admit it but i know very little about it,

To the best of my knowledge if you own the program the font comes with then you can pretty much use it for what ever you want (as in the fonts that come photoshop and word etc), the only ones you have to watch out for are ones you have downloaded from the web as they are often free for personal use

Any help would be appreciated

497922 2006-11-10 07:55:00 To the best of my knowledge if you own the program the font comes with then you can pretty much use it for what ever you want (as in the fonts that come photoshop and word etc)Own is the important word here - and you do not own MS Word, nor Photoshop, nor any of the fonts that come with them. You own a license to use them, with strict limitations on what you can and can't do.

If the fonts are included with (for example) MS Word, they will probably be covered by the Word or MS Office EULA. Read that - it will tell you what you legally can and can't do with the fonts.

As far as making graphic banners that use the font - this is fine. Where you could potentially get into trouble is if you used them as a custom (i.e. dynamically downloaded) font for your webpage text, or if you tried to distribute them.

497923 2006-11-10 09:44:00 You'll find many fonts that are 100% free of any copyright. And there is software that can be used to manipulate those fonts to re-create your own. I think that's the direction you should be looking... ideally.

Having said that - there are all the fonts in many programmes that are specifically designed for you to use, whatever commercial purpose. Which is part of what you pay for when get the licence to use them.

497924 2006-11-10 09:55:00 The issue here is that the client will not be aware if the "winning entry" has or has not used a font that is subject to copyright I suspect (and may have been obtained by the author in a less than legit manner, e.g. P2P)

That could *possibly* place the client in breach without knowing, but it would be a remote possibility.
