2006-11-09 16:16:00 | I have seen many people on the net looking for a solution to this error when attempting to partition their drives. I have got over this problem quite a few times by: 1. Start computer normally, install partition magic, go to start/run and type in msconfig and press enter. 2. When the system configuration utility is on screen hit the BOOT.INI tab and then check the Safe Boot option. 3. Re-start the computer and it will go into safe mode. Run Partition Magic and create the partitions, hit apply and restart the computer. The drive will be unlocked and will allow itself to be partitioned. 4. Once re-started go to start/run and type in msconfig and press enter then hit the BOOT.INI tab and take the tick out of the Safe Boot option. 5. Restart the machine and you should see the new partition. Hope this helps a few people out.

2006-11-09 16:23:00 | why not run it from dos ? | drcspy (146) | |
2006-11-10 00:56:00 | Please explain how you would run Partition Magic from DOS on winxp? I am sure we could all possibly learn. Your one-line entry does not help others who have paid quite a lot of money for a program that will not do the business.

2006-11-10 04:24:00 | Well, I've just resized my c and d partitions. Set it all up in Part Magic (8.05 I think it is) and on reboot it stepped through the actions and did it's job. Had to move some data, so that took about an hour.Rebooted twice and it was done. | Neil McC (178) | |

I was about to resort to installing some software which interrupts normal boot process in order to have command of the HDD prior to Windows grabbing hold... You have saved me a LOT of time. If anyone is interested, 90% of the time I get this problem is upon providing a clean-fix solution to laptop users. I charge a tiny, tiny amount of money, format, fix hardware problem, install all drivers and essentials (AVG, VLC, Zone Alarm etc..) then creating an image for the user, with bootable access to said image. Upon using Partition Magic with most laptop configs, I find the HDD is locked prior to PM doing it's thing on bootup. [edited] why not run it from dos ? I would also like to know how one can "run it from dos ?" with an XP machine as DOS is 100% gone in XP. Running "cmd" within XP may look like a DOS prompt, but it's not. I can however, see how one who jumps to such a quick and hasty conclusion based on the above, thinking that DOS is still the back-end of the Windows GUI, may make themselves look like [edited]. I mean, that's just a very logical opinion. One I find hard to argue with. actually mate from considerable experience i can assure you that partition magic is certainly magic and definitely 'does the business'......... I know of another type of computer user who thinks that everything is "magic". My grandmother who, albeit very sweet, is totally 100% clueless when it comes to very basic IT understanding and principals. | 497844 | 2007-12-21 22:57:00 | I have found that Partition Magic works well in XP. It reboots into its own DOS and does the work, then reboots back into Windows. There is another way. Get a free copy of "Puppy Linux 3.01" on CD. Boot with this and use the Partition Manager (it does NTFS & Fat32). It's almost the same as Partition Magic. Puppy Linux is also very useful for deleting infected files which refuse to be deleted in Windows. Also used it to edit the boot.ini on XP in partition 3 so that I could make an image of it & restore to Partition 1 (I have spare Windows on my box) |
