2006-11-14 01:12:00 | G'day, I am running 2 SATA HDs in a RAID 0 array (called AID by some). I want to add a 250 GB IDE HD to run on this computer. I tried setting setting the jumper as slave and plugged it into the IDE cable midway plug. The IDE cable terminates at the Floppy drive. This didn't work - BIOS didn't recognise any of the hard disks. So here I am. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA Digikiwi Here is the mobo model: Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939

What else is on the same IDE connection as this 250 GB IDE hdd? Maybe I'm not making myself clear . The IDE cable starting from the motherboard is connected to the 250GB Hard drive at halfway and the end connector is plugged into the Floppy disk drive . I've now got the computer working but it doesn't recognise the new hardware (nor acknowledge that it's there) . Something to note: The HD was formatted for Mac, but has been reformatted in MS DOS on the MAC . Put the IDE hdd on Secondary Master Do you mean in BIOS? Cheers Digikiwi |

2006-11-14 02:01:00 | The 250GB IDE hard drive will not connect to the same cable as the floppy drive. The connector does not have enough pins. It should connect to the same cable as your cd/dvd drive.

2006-11-14 02:07:00 | That could explain things. So the ribbon cable for the floppy is different? What is that cable called, for future reference? So I can only add the drive by removing one of the two optical drives? Is there any way to have all three ?

2006-11-14 02:11:00 | Correct there arent enough pins, I would unplug that hdd from the floppy connection, otherwise you may kill it totally . Yup I mean in the BIOS, (Put it on AUTO under Primary or Secondary Master / Slave), depending on what IDE connection, you've put it on) . Depending on whats on the Primary or Secondary IDE connection already, jumper this 250 GB hdd to either Master or Slave (just make sure 2 IDE devices (CD / DVD or hdd), arent both jumpered / configured to Master, or Slave, otherwise neither will work) .

2006-11-14 02:15:00 | That could explain things . So the ribbon cable for the floppy is different? What is that cable called, for future reference? A floppy cable has only got 34 pins ( I think, cant remember now, I dont have floppies in these) . I use a USB flash disk, if I have to copy something / or flash something) . A hdd cable has 40 pins . So I can only add the drive by removing one of the two optical drives? Is there any way to have all three? And yup, you can only have 2 ide devices, NOT 3 or more on an IDE connection . And a floppy cable wasnt made for a hard drive . If there's nothing on the Primary IDE connection, put it on that . What are the cds on? Primary or secondary Master and slave? If the cds / optical drives are a CD and DVD burner, remove the CD burner . A DVD burner can do what a CD burner does anyway, as well as burn to DVD . Altho, its not a good idea to have a cd / dvd burner on the same IDE connection as a hard drive .

2006-11-15 01:24:00 | That mobo has 2 IDE headers, therefore it will suport 4 IDE drives, you have 2 used already, so plug the drive into the free cable slot...If your cable only has 1 connector, buy another 1 which has master and slave slots. You can also merge that IDE into your RAID array if you like!
