498584 2006-11-12 23:04:00 I am currently unable to connect to sites using http, but can connect via https. I can get to microsoft.com on https, but not http. I am using IE7 (and Firefox) on XP Pro SP2.

I am sure it is going to be a simple setting somewhere but I cannot for the life of me find it.

I've had a look at those suggestions but my problem is the exact reverse. I can only access secure sites (and FTP).

For the record, I have turned off the windows firewall (I'm behind an ADSL router with NAT) and still cannot access normal non-secure sites.

my apologies..I wasn't reading properly..

are you using IE? If so, what have you got for the privacy and security options?

498588 2006-11-13 03:21:00 I'm using IE7 and FF 1.5. Neither works. I have "RESET" all IE settings to defaults, to no avail. Miami Steve (2128)
498589 2006-11-13 03:26:00 What happens when you try and access a normal http site? Error message?
It sounds like something is blocking port 80.
I take it your email still works?

I get a page that says :

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.

Most likely causes:
- You are not connected to the Internet.
- The website is encountering problems.
- There might be a typing error in the address.

What you can try:
- Diagnose Connection Problems
- More Information

Selecting Diagnose Connection Problems and following the instructions produces a diagnostic log as follows:

info: FTP (Passive): Successfully connected to ftp.microsoft.com.
info: HTTPS: Successfully connected to www.microsoft.com.
warn: HTTP: Error 12029 connecting to www.hotmail.com: A connection with the server could not be established.
warn: HTTP: Error 12002 connecting to www.microsoft.com: The operation timed out.
error: Could not make an HTTP connection.

498591 2006-11-13 04:48:00 Another quick test just to confirm that it is port 80 that is not working:

Try and go here (http://diwana.org).
You should get the error you have been getting.

Now try here (http://diwana.org:81)
You should hopefully get the diwana.org website.

498592 2006-11-13 04:52:00 Might be a firewall stopping it, what firewall is installed.

Disable it and see what happens.

498593 2006-11-13 04:57:00 CYaBro, tried both those pages with no luck.

Speedy, no firewall. Was using only Windows Firewall on this machine (a laptop) but have completely disabled it for the moment.

I'm still trying different things and will update as I get results.
