498480 2006-11-14 03:54:00 Therefore, I have decided to walk the walk to Orcon, and signed up with them today on the Advanced/15GB/Max/128 plan. I'll report the performance after the changeover :) Terry Porritt (14)
498481 2006-11-14 04:16:00 Found a great utile for scheduled testing(with e-mail notification) on BB speeds etc that you could use as prove......., if you have $18.USD

If you use it unregistered, you cant schedule or test upload. But a very detailed meassure of suppose BB speeds.

Sorry mods, this isnt a sale and wouldnt suggest, other than a hot topic that everyone wants to sort the quicker the better..

Would I get in trouble for suggesting e-mailed results straight to ....well you know <coughTelecomcough> who!.....LOL:annoyed:

498482 2006-11-14 04:17:00 Gone from 2mbit to 2.4mbit... not much of an improvement but at least it hasn't gone slower :) Agent_24 (57)

A very interesting program, thanks. :)

"An unacceptable level of packet loss has been detected which should be investigated"

The fantastic great unleashed Go Slow offering from Telecom

498484 2006-11-14 07:06:00 I had to laugh - downloading a file some time after midnight the other night, the speed was going between 5kbs and 20kbs. So of course I was feeling really unleashed. cbee (10858)

Handy if you want it automated and aren't sure what a good ping etc but it doesn't do anything you can't do yourself.

A few download tests
A few pings to various places
Traceroutes

Surprise, surprise, my pings were good, my speed sucks.

It can schedule them to run as often as you like in the wee hours of the morning etc.....

Actually, being honest, my pings for most places were good too, it was the East Asian sites that gave 1000ms and bad results, but the download tests were just as bad as expected, less than 2x dialup for UK, and just over 2x dialup for East Coast USA, the excessive packet losses, like 22% and 26% I just couldn't understand. In another run I got 62% packet loss to ains.net.au. Tests carried out at 6:52pm.

The advantage of this program is that it is an 'independent' test, and if registered, the results could be emailed to your ISP (ie Telecom :) )to pre-empt their usual fatuous responses.

You are allowed to copy or print the results up to 3 times, with the unregistered version, but at slight extra inconvenience, screen dumps can be made.

498488 2006-11-14 21:53:00 Just for interest here (forums.whirlpool.net.au) is a link to the Whirlpool forums in Aus.
On that site is a link to an Excel file that can estimate how far you are from the exchange and what speeds you "should" be able to get on ADSL & ADSL2+.

Here at work our downstream line attenuation is 14dB - ADSL rate is 8000kbps - ADSL2+ rate is 22431kbps - Distance to exchange is 1014 metres

Actual downstream rate in router is 7136kbps.
Speed test on NZDSL site gives avg 4500kbps down and 550kbps up.

Amazing link and it is bang on with what I had yesterday.

4.0km = 56db = 4Mbit

I get 52db but roughly 4.0km from the exchange.

I usually connect at 1mbps but yesterday it was 4Mbit and I got what I expected as unleashed for the first time :)

Over the past month I have done speed tests every 2-3 days and yesterday was the only day bar 1 other day to get over 2mbps.

One time was 3000kbps
Yesterday was 3890kbps

Pitty I didn't have a router and the modem turns off with the PC :(!
