499059 2006-11-15 10:00:00 You could try installing the latest C++ runtime:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Runtime (www.microsoft.com)

499060 2006-11-15 10:55:00 What does C++ Runtime actually do, in simple terms?

And would it be possible for a program such as Acronis to check (during installation) to see that all DLLs are actually present - and if not then add them - rather than to cr*p out with an error message?
I am not sure wether MS C++ is a runtime language or they are just DLL's that are linked to it(Which I suspect). I'm a Delphi man myself.
Yes a good install should check to see if the neccessaries are there and if not put them there.

499061 2006-11-15 22:45:00 Thanks Mike, HadO and Speedy.

Note that the laptop DLLs are OLDER than my desktop, that is: the DLLs dated Aug 2001 work with Acronis whereas April 2003 DLLs do not.

From the MS help-support page:
This problem does not occur when you use a version of the Msvcrt.dll file and of the Msvcirt.dll file that is earlier than 7.0.

Soon I will use the earlier (2001) DLLs and see what happens...

499062 2006-11-15 23:28:00 Well, I would try uninstalling and re-installing ensuring A/V services are disabled and all other apps closed....It may install correctly this time?.

Oh, and re-installing SP2 after wont hurt either!

499063 2006-11-16 00:39:00 Final success: all seems to be OK, after putting in the older DLLs from the laptop. Acronis now works fine - it made a 6.42 Gb image of C drive in only about 3 minutes - it checked OK with the Restore/explore feature and Verification. BTW, I have most of my data + other programs on a partition. I am now in the process of setting options for backing to DVDs.

Sol - thanks but I always disable AV and other programs when installing new programs, and I already tried unistalling then reinstalling Acronis. But I will admit that I do not have WinXP SP2 installed (on purpose).

499064 2008-02-18 04:32:00 Speedy, Mike, PCTek, and other PF1 experts -

What does C++ Runtime actually do, in simple terms?

And would it be possible for a program such as Acronis to check (during installation) to see that all DLLs are actually present - and if not then add them - rather than to cr*p out with an error message?

Why YES, that is what a half way conscientious software developer WOULD do!!

However, acronis isn't one of those .

I'm now on my second day trying to get this buggy crap to work .

And those esoteric ways they have of letting you know it crashed . . . . those are precious! . . . . not even a remote clue as to what went wrong . . . lol .

Earlier versions were awesome, but when I upgraded from v7 to v10/11, the proverbial sh . . . . t really hit the fan .

Partial list of problems so far:

1 . 'Boot' CD won't boot
2 . fox . dll placed into temporary directory and had to be copied to the program files acronis folder (Thank God for Google)
3 . C++ Runtime error
4 . Boot CD just HANGS there . (Other Boot CD's I have work FINE) .
5 . Wilders Security Forums is a joke . Posts get deleted, and you are generally ignored there .
6 . acronis is fond of making you load MS debugging software, so you can provide them with data as to what went wrong . . . . . guess they don't believe in testing this crap . .

I'm STILL trying to get v10 to install/run . . . . . . . . . . . what a mess . . . . . . . :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: . .

OH, and I'm a tech guy . . . . lol . . . I can just see some poor grandma fighting this stuff . . . . . . . . lol . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . z

499066 2008-02-18 06:03:00 Thank you again for answering a 1.5 yr old thread. I seriously think that you work for Nero or someone because all 4 of your threads have had to do with Acronis or Roxio.

Go away!
