2006-11-13 05:15:00 | Have you powered off and on your ADSL router? Yes. Latest update - I restarted the computer and was able to access web pages. Diagnostics showed FTP, HTTPS and HTTP were all working. I fired up Ad-Aware and downloaded the latest files. The computer is also running CA eTrust Integrated Threat Management (AV and Pest Patrol) so I got that updated to the latest definitions. After about 4 minutes it all died again - diagnostics now show FTP and HTTPS working, but a problem with HTTP. I will run full Ad-Aware scan and AV scan and update this thread. Not sure if it's relevant, but there are no LAN problems. I can map drives on other computers on my network.

2006-11-13 21:18:00 | Have been doing some more investigation and have discovered the following: After a restart I can access web pages for between 4 and 5 minutes. After this period I can only access FTP/HTTPS. If I access a streaming video, it will continue streaming. The inference is that port 80 is open for only a few minutes before something blocks it. Is there anything I can use to view the status of the ports on my computer?

2006-11-13 22:07:00 | I would surmise that one of the apps installed is blocking port 80 and this happens after the program has started hence the 4-5 min when it works. So, I would STOP the programs one by one until it works. Maybe the ad-ware has disabled something when its done a fix!

2006-11-22 21:05:00 | Hi Jack, I'd love to be able to say "do this" or "do that" and it will be fine, but I never did get to the bottom of it. I tried several things : 1. Ran System File Checker sfc /scannow which made no difference. 2. Tried to do an XP Repair. Got XP disks and registration codes mixed up, so restarted half way through and that was it - end of machine - would not boot. 3. Only remaining option - reloaded machine from scratch using recovery discs. So far the problem has not recurred. Sorry I can't be any more help.

2007-10-05 21:47:00 | I had the EXACT same problem as Miami Steve and wanted to post this here to make sure someone else saw this . The fix appears to be making sure that your firewall is turned ON for your VPN stack . At least, that appears to fix the issue for me . This is an odd issue, because I was able to use HTTPS and FTP, AND I could use HTTP as long as it wasn't over the standard port 80 . I suspected my VPN client for some time, so I was poking through it's menus where I saw a 'Stateful Firewall (Always On)' option in the menu; in Advanced Mode for our client . I clicked this, which put a checkmark next to it in the menu, and then tried my regular HTTP sites again and it worked! I have several poorly developed theories on why this might be the case, but I guess the point of this post is that if you have a VPN client installed, then toggle its firewall setting on <=> off to see if this fixes your problem .

This worked! I've been trying to fix this forever and your suggestion worked. Please believe me when I say I will love you forever! Thanks so much. |
