498749 2006-11-13 08:43:00 Firstly, I'm glad I found you all, so thanks for having me . I'm not often moved to post my own dramas on forums but I feel I must comment on Slingsh#t .

I recently made the mistake of terminating a contract with ihug early as I didn't like the way Vodafone were taking the tarrifs, this despite being protected on the old tarrif I was on .

So, seeing an attractive offer from Slingsh#t I plumped for the 25 GB, 7 . 5 (lol) Mb downstream with 128 Kb up . From the get-go the whole experience of transferring my account was a bloody drama . The hours spent on hold listening to Dido are of little consequence, considering you get bad customer service in all walks of life from the odd individual, and in truth, there was only one arrogant, unhelpful and sulky git in Tech Support . . . the rest, in fairness were very professional and more than helpful . But watch out for Moody Maori in tech support . . . . :nerd:

The problem I have now is that although this connection is purportedly more than twice as fast as my old 3 . 5 Mb connection through ihug, it is actually twice as slow . I'm gobsmacked . Every speedtest site I go to has me running way slower than that, the last one rating the connection as ISDN .

And the only way to resolve this? You guessed it, back to Dido . . . none of that email and job-ticket stuff here, no it's waste another hour of your life on the telephone .

The only difference in connection type is my old connection was USB, this one on Ethernet (recommended . . . ) .

Has anyone else experienced a drop in performance with slingsh#t, or has moody stitched me up?

498750 2006-11-13 10:40:00 Read some more posts, there are heaps and heaps of people with slow connections problems :)

Its the Telecom network and things are being fixed as we are told. They are getting in trouble for their use of words on the unleashed plan from Xtra and have backed down on limiting it any further. IMO I think Telecom is heading down the river without a paddle and has it in for themselves.

Ringing most probably wont help as you are just a number at the moment. Meaning most of the 10% of people with slow connections are complaining and there is nothing helpdeks can do to help untill telecom sort it.

498751 2006-11-13 13:09:00 my slingshot seems fast up to 450k/sec... only slow during peak due to telecom throttling... panther2 (11440)
498752 2006-11-13 13:13:00 My slingshot download rate has been suffering lately, but for surfing etc its been satisfactory. The downloading prob though is starting to wear thin rob_on_guitar (4196)
498753 2006-11-13 16:56:00 Slingshot has been fine for me. No change in speed. Good helpdesk.
Did you get the name of the person(s) on the helpdesk? Contact their supervisor.

Are you on a contract with Slingshot? If not, then change. If so, I believe breaking a contract usually means just paying for the router or whatever you got from the ISP for free.

498754 2006-11-13 17:32:00 Seems to me there are some people getting good speeds and some not. This applies to all ISP's. None of them can supply any greater speed than they can get from Telecom.
So if speed is your real concern it doesn't matter a damn which one you are with.
Prices, which are another major concern, are realy much the same with everyone. Some of the plans sound nice, but, while some may be a bit cheaper than others in one area, they are dearer in others. If price is your main criteria for selecting anything, you've got a lot to learn about life.

As I see it , the basis for selecting an ISP is the quality of the service they supply and the help they give. And most of us don't need their help line anyway. And their fairness and honesty.

So which ISP you use doesn't mean a thing. Pick the one with the prettiest name.

Before I reply in full to you can you confirm a couple of things for me?

That my main criteria for selecting anything is price, and that I have a lot to learn about life?

That I am in some way an idiot for spending time on a helpline, despite you not knowing what the issue was? It certainly wasn't configuring a router...

I'm asking because I don't know you, and it may just be the way you talk but having read your reply twice I doubt it.

Expand on your comments please.
