498544 2006-11-12 20:47:00 Hi,

I have DELL 4600 ( a few years old ) decided to upgrade RAM from 256 to 512.Bought a 256mb RAM stick from Dick Smiths and installed it. When start PC BIOS says 512mb RAM installed ok but when booting up I get a message like (sorry at work and never wrote it down:rolleyes: )

"OS is is limiting RAM to 256mb "

I've checked the card and its sitting correctly in the RAM slot. DIMM 0 slots have 128 cards so ahve pugged into DIMM 1 A slot.

Max RAM for that model is 4G and manual says it can take 128,256,512 or 1 giig.

Are there any setting in BIOS I have to change or something I have missed ?

thanks

498546 2006-11-12 21:26:00 i'd guess you are running 98 ?......you can limit the ram in 98 .......goto start/run and type in msconfig then goto advanced i think....... drcspy (146)
498547 2006-11-13 02:54:00 Thanks for reply.

Am on XP - Dell 4600 I got from Warehouse 2 years ago - have added RAM OK - Bios was starting OS in install mode so was limiting memory - I turned this off and all is OK. and PC fast now (well faster  )

Am just checking what OS install mode is though.

498548 2006-11-13 21:02:00 drcspy, I have made posting on this site regarding additional Ram and it's the first time Msconfig advanced setting has been mentioned.

Running 98SE on this IBM P11 with 320mb installed over 3 slots 256 and 64, it's previous owner was running 576mb.

Will ticking the Ram box in the msconfig and changing the 320 to 512 or more work?.

Thanks.

498549 2006-11-14 02:57:00 well that function allows you to LIMIT the ram available for whatever reason you may have......i DO believe that 98 wont correctly run with more than 5123mb and probably doens' tneed it anyway drcspy (146)
498550 2006-11-14 03:01:00 Nice typo drcspy. :D Even XP doesn't need 5123 mb! pcuser42 (130)
498551 2006-11-14 18:51:00 drcspy thanks for that.
