499656 2006-11-16 07:03:00 I have been complaining about the speeds on my computers since going over to Go Large. My set up is 3 stand alone computers which connect individually to the internet. Two are used more than the other. On doing an Xtra speed test tonight I got the following results.Computer 1. -361Kbps(lousey) Computer 2. -1073Kbps(3 times faster) Computer 3. -2143kbps(5 times faster).I would have thought that I would get very similar results. Why is one computer performing whilst the others are not? Computers 1 & 3 use diffferent versions of ME while Computer 2 uses XP.I'm not chock full of Trojans etc & am very fussy when it comes to virus checks.Obviously the line to the exchange is OK so why are the computers performing differently? Is it reformat /cleanout time? Any suggestions greatly appreciated amyes5 (2773)
499657 2006-11-16 07:47:00 The differences will most likely be due to your set ups somehow, the inherent line speed to your computer wont change because you hook up a different computer, except if one of those computers has very slow componentry, then it may give a slow result like below.

Here are my results for a range of networked computers:

Athlon XP2600+ WinXP ...............3394kbps
Athlon 1.333MHz T'Bird WinXP.......3472kbps
500MHz Compaq, Win98SE............3214kbps
200MHz Pentium MX Win95B..........1105kbps

I suspect the 200MHz is just inherently slower.

I couldn't get a test on Windows for Work Groups because IE 3 wouldn't run the speed test, or rather it wouldn't display the bar chart. :)

499658 2006-11-16 08:56:00 Does this mean then that half the people who are complaining about Go Large really just have Computers that can't "hack it"? amyes5 (2773)
499659 2006-11-16 09:04:00 No , I don't think many will be running 200MHz Pentiums with WFWG :) :)

I don't know why you are getting significantly different indicated speeds with different computers, but around 1.2 secs for a 500kB file is fairly small, and I suspect timing errors could be large, and different hardware could affect results, as well as systems that may be clogged with junk. I'd tend to put greater faith in taking an average download time for a bigger file over a longer time.

499660 2006-11-16 09:39:00 I think it could be the different OS stu161204 (123)
499661 2006-11-16 09:54:00 I guess that is common. Every time I did the speed test, the result was different. developer (4447)
499662 2006-11-16 12:07:00 It couldn't just be the physical connection could it? I have one computer that is at the end of a 15 meter extension cord that gets about half the speed of the other, which connects directly. Vince (406)

Yes. Try it without the extension cord.
