499336 2006-11-15 06:58:00 Hi, I'm getting a 2nd harddrive becuase the 1st has run out of space.
My Current one is a Barracuda 7200.7 SATA - ST3200822AS (www.seagate.com)
(I got the ST3200822AS from the Device Manager)

I brought a Seagate 300GB Barracuda Serial ATA 8MB 7200rpm NCQ Hard Drive (supercheappc.biz)
But since it's out of stock, they have suggested Seagate 320GB 16Mb SATA II 7200RPM .10 (supercheappc.biz)

I know the 2nd one is better, Larger Cache, same rpm,

My Question is, Is my computer SATA2 compitable? or how do I check?

P.S What does the NCQ mean on the 1st one & the .10 on the 2nd one mean?

Thanks (Hopefully) in advance
Daniel

499337 2006-11-15 07:05:00 You'll have to find out what the brand/model of the motherboard is.

Before we can tell u if it supports SATA 2.

NCQ = (en.wikipedia.org)

A system that only supports SATA 1, will still run a SATA 2 hdd, (once you change the jumper on the SATA 2 hdd), but it'll only run at SATA 1 speed.

499338 2006-11-15 09:27:00 As Speedy says, advise us what your motherboard is. If you're unsure, download, install and run Belarc (http://www.belarc.com) - a free utility. When you run it, it'll show your motherboard make and model under "Main Circuit Board". Greg (193)

499340 2006-11-15 18:26:00 According to this (www.asus.com)

It does support SATA 2

nForce4 Storage:
- 4 x SATA 3Gb/s <- This is SATA 2.
- 2 x UltraDMA 133/100/66/33
- NVRAID : RAID0, RAID1, RAID 0+1 and JBOD span cross SATA and PATA

You can also get updates for it here (support.asus.com)

If u decide to update something, READ FIRST

499342 2006-11-15 19:28:00 No worries. Speedy Gonzales (78)
499343 2006-11-15 20:07:00 The Barracuda 10s are supposed to be nice drives, haven't used one myself, have installed a few - no problems -(that's what the .10 is). If you are getting that drive for the same price as the 300gb then go for it. trig42 (11325)
499344 2006-11-15 20:32:00 Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. A8N-E 2.XXThat's a v/ nice motherboard :) Greg (193)
499345 2006-11-15 20:35:00 I would get the Seagate 320GB 16Mb SATA II 7200RPM .10, as it is bigger, faster, has bigger cache - but it doesn't appear to have NCQ.

NCQ might be worth getting, so perhaps check with them that it has it, if not you could get this www.nfc.co.nz
