499690 2006-11-17 01:39:00 The backup files are only the daily working files, .doc etc. If the harddrive dies then put the image back on the new drive and then restore the encrypted files. If for some reason the image fails then reinstall the OS and Backup software and re-enter the encryption info and passphrase. Any reason this will not work?

Sounds okay, just making sure you are aware of the dangers of encrypted files

499691 2006-11-17 01:57:00 Hi Steve, have just been to the Acronis site and they want 49.99 euro for version 10, 96 bucksNZ, how did you manage the $60.00NZ.Ron..

Hi Ron,

Go to: www.softwareoasis.cc

It is the 7th product down the page.

You can get the currency in NZ dollars (or whatever) by selecting on the main page: www.softwareoasis.cc

BTW, there are some dodgy sites around that sell Acronis and other software for cheap, so be careful. I cannot recall how I found "softwareoasis" but it must have been via Google or a CNET/Download.com review/advert. After I downloaded and installed Acronis, I registered it and all was fine, so how it was cheaper than the $50 USD = $75 NZD on the official Acronis site, I do not know. Acronis site here:
http://www.acronis.com

BTW, I saved $10 by UNticking the "save a digital copy on our site for redownloading" box.

499692 2006-11-17 02:03:00 I have Acronis 9 but it doesn't backup to CD-RW or DVD-RW. The Acronis website also states that the software will not do this.

Try this:

Tools > Options > Default Settings > Archive Splitting

There you should see CD, DVD, Iomega Zip, and Automatic options.

I would be surprised if version 9 could not do this as I was using an older version that I picked up in Malaysia :D ;) and it could split the .tib file into CD size bits.

499693 2006-11-17 02:48:00 Having tried umpteen backup programs, I use Syncback which can be scheduled. I have arranged it to back up to folders (on a spare hard drive) capable of being copied to CDs.
The CDs are my final backup of course and can be stored off site.
I like the price of Syncback - free.

I have known that the archive can be split to suit media size but I was of the view that Acronis didn't burn the image directly to a CD-RW. I will try it.

Cheers

One thing I haven't mentioned is what ever program I end up using must be able to run as a service as this process has to be totally automatic. I will look at Syncback but does it run as a service and will it burn directly to CD-RW, FTP etc.

Go to their site and read what it does.

Actually Winzip 11 does that as well. It backs up to cd/dvd, sends to FTP.

And will even email whoever to tell them that it was successful.

But Pro only does this, so you'll have to pay for it.

499698 2006-11-17 22:17:00 Hi berryb
I think you have already been convinced that Acronis True Image can back up to CD's. Just in case you still have any doubts, I have just checked my copy of version 9 and can assure you it is one of the options.

Acronis must be able to do this, but I always make back up files on the HD first, then burn the DVDs. Hmmmnn... let me check the PDF user manual... OK, it says "burn to CD / removable media" but does this mean DIRECT to CD? ... I will try a test now... YES it DOES burn direct to CD or DVD.
