499323 2006-11-15 04:23:00 Ok folks, I'm at my wits end. I have tried about 60 different ways to solve this problem and nothing is working, but I have a new lead, I just don't know how to go about it. Let me explain...

About 6 months ago, I bought myself a brand new Gateway Gt5650. A few weeks ago, I started recieving error messages that said "USB Device not recognized". Problem is, they happened when there was no USB device hooked up. And whats weirder is, they would constantly appear. The error would appear, then vanish seconds later, then reappear again. This is more a nuisance than a real problem, but I still want to fix it.

Here is what ive tried: I deleted all the USB drivers and hubs and then let them reinstall. I did a system restore back to when the problems were not occuring. I checked every USB port to make sure they were active and working (they all are). The only way I could get it to stop was to disable one of the USB hubs in the device manager, but then all my USB ports stop working properly. And finally, in desperation, I reformatted my hard drive (after backing up my files of course). Now, when I got back to a fresh new windows, everything was fine. No sign of a error message.

BUT! When I re-installed my updated graphics card (which replaces the onboard one), it appeared again. Which leads me to believe that it may be the culprit. Could the drivers from the old graphics card be conflicting with the new ones and causing some kind of phantom device effect?

I dunno, im at my wits end to solve this problem. Any ideas?

What do Gateway say about this problem? I'm sure the guarantee is still valid after six months. Asking them might have saved you a lot of time and frustration. ;)

Have you disabled the on-board video in the BIOS? It shouldn't affect the USB, but ... :(

499325 2006-11-15 04:48:00 Hi, Graham is right?, your 1st port of call should be your warranty/helpdesk support of PC manufacturer. If thats not possible, there web site for updates (mobo chipset & BIOS) and forums to check for like issues.

Are your keyboard and mouse USB?

Have you installed the drivers from the CD or updated drivers when you re-built the O/S?

Good luck

edit - cant find your model number exactly, are you sure of number 5650?

499326 2006-11-15 04:48:00 Gateway were the first people I talked to, they walked me through half this stuff and then told me to reformat. OfW0lfandRaven (11471)
499327 2006-11-15 04:54:00 Perhaps a bios upgrade then to refresh the mobo hardware. SolMiester (139)
499328 2006-11-15 05:14:00 It might be safer to try a new USB driver before a BIOS upgrade. BIOS upgrades should be done only when the new version is known to fix a problem being experienced. (I know "nothing can go wrong". But things sometimes do go wrong. Murphy never sleeps).

Try disabling the on-board video first. I didn't capture the URL, but "gateway USB" to google.co.nz gave a site with USB drivers listed by company as the first result. (Various search strings didn't give any results about USB problems on Gateways, so it's not a common problem).
