499869 2006-11-17 04:37:00 i have a dvd cd and i thought it on dvd 9 format...when i insert it to the drive it says that windows dont detect any cd on the drive and if i open the drive, there are no files present...why? what should i do? jonkimnicko (10061)

or try the dvd in another dvd drive - it's easier to ruin a dvd by a small scratch than a cd, so the dvd might be buggered (or your dvd drive)

why? as i understand it:
the dvd data is all packed in much denser, and the cd drive cannot reliably read at this higher density (laser too inaccurate i guess). th dvd drive can read dvds and also knows how to read the cds (by adapting to lower density)

so dvd looks like this --> 10101110100000101010101110
and cd looks like this --> 1 0 1 0 1 1 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 1 1 1 0

which is how dvds store so much more data on the same size disc

dvds also only write data in one location, while cds write data several times incase of a scratch ruining the first copy... the data density and lack of backups is why a dvd will be buggered by only a slight scratch while a cd can sustain pretty major damage
