2006-11-21 23:25:00 | I have a Vodafone Mobile Connect (VMC) card, which is my only connection to the internet. It manages to maintain a connection okay, but when I run VPN with it in order to connect to a customer's machine, it is very unstable. After 10 minutes or so of not being actively used, the VPN connection dies and effectively takes the normal connnection with it. I say "effectively" because the normal internet connection appears to be working -- the double-screen icon is there in the taskbar, the blue light is on on the VMC card, but nothing will work from then on till I shut VMC down and restart it. I have upgraded the Vodafone firmware and software to the lastest versions. I've changed the APN to web.vodafone.net.nz as suggested on the on-line help. Neither of these has brought about an improvement. I don't believe the problem is on the target machine as I'm the only one who has problems. Does anyone know of any tweaks for improving the performance, or at least a way to stop the VPN failure from screwing up the internet connection? Chainey

2006-12-01 08:26:00 | I see that in the latest PC World, Juha Saarinen makes the following comment about the "Vodem": "As the Vodem installs itself as a Dial Up Networking device, you can actually use it without the VMC Lite client." My 3G card also seems to work through a dial-up connection, but I can't use it directly because it has a "code" rather than a phone number -- i.e. *99***1#. Anyway, I tried it and it didn't work. Any ideas? I'd like to replicate Juha's feat, as I have similar problems with the VMC software.

2006-12-02 03:29:00 | I've had similar experience with VMCs. They just don't seem to be particularly great with VPN connections and no-one I've talked to at Vodafone seems to have any kind of suitable technical knowledge to assist. Have to say that I gave up in the end, and while I realise this is of no help to you, I'm interested to see if you manage to get a solution.

2006-12-17 06:44:00 | Not sure what the VPN issue might be (but it's probably fair to assume Vodafone's UMTS isn't ideal for it), but.. instead of the VMC Lite, try using Vodafone's latest, full VMC 7.03 client. Vodafone only lets me have their 3G networking stuff for a very short period of time, so I haven't been able to test this, but apparently the full VMC client solves a lot of issues. | Juha (10418) | |
2006-12-24 09:50:00 | Thanks Juha, but it's the full VMC client software I have. I never had the "lite". I may have found a (partial) solution, but I'll test it for another couple of days to be sure, then post it here if it works out.
