501014 2006-11-21 23:04:00 After not being able to connect to the net at all last night (Router active connection, login fine, but no DNS or ping to any IP address at all outside my home) I tried to call the helpdesk to get an answer.

I was hoping to here a status message on their phone but instead only had three options. After spending 45 minutes listening to music not even knowing how many others were in the queue ahead of me I got sick of it and hung up.

I see today from work they had issues at an exchange.

Well if they simply put a status message on their phone system many people would spend just a short time on their phone line and then be able to hang up knowing what was going on.

Come on IHug get up with the Information World as you already have the technology to implement this.

501015 2006-11-21 23:15:00 The same thing happened with dialup this morning. Couldnt get on, it kept saying phone line is busy. Not mine, but Ihugs. Usually when this message appears their phones are screwed as well.

And the main phone # didnt work at Ihug earlier today either, even if u wanted to listen to a network status message. It brought up the no such # dialtone. Altho if and when I do manage to get thru, I have heard a status message, on the "odd" occasion.

501016 2006-11-21 23:36:00 I've e-mailed them three times in the past week and not even an acknowledgment from them JJJJJ (528)
501017 2006-11-22 04:34:00 Ihug has a message on their status page regarding a call centre overload fault: see here (www.ihug.co.nz).

Unfortunately it isn't much help when you are trying to call them because you cannot get on the internet let alone view their network status webpage.

eww!! dial up!! Is the fault location specific? I have a friend who is always bragging about how good their service is - funny I haven't heard from him in the last couple of weeks so not sure if that is because he cant get on or because his service is still fine and oblivious to the problems in other areas.

Got home from work and again could not get on. This time not even an login. Active connection though but no login.
Rang again but expected nothing but got a shock when a status message came on saying there was an issue in Auckland causing congestion and authentication problems. Damn Auckland again. We pay for their roads and likely to pay for their stadium and now they stop us from getting on the net.

Anyway took 2 hours of trying to get logged on. Must stay on now.

501021 2006-11-22 09:22:00 We sometimes take this interweb thing for granted but when something goes wrong, everyone's-a-fuming.
One fibre cut can interrupt the internet for an entire part of New Zealand. We're so reliant on the always-on*, instant connection, yet there isnt the kind of network setup to work around a fault in one part. Hey it might cost a lot to setup alternative data routes initially, but think of possible losses if a major outage occurs!
During Auckland's power crisis, the internet was knocked out for a decent percentage of users all over the country. Servers were down (so much for redundancy) and so were some phone lines, including voip ofcourse.

Sounds like a good plan for terrorists: knock out international routers. Hmm, but we'll keep that quiet for now.

Anyway.. enough rambling..

501022 2006-11-22 09:56:00 I also had no connection all day and was still not there just after 4-00 when I last tried re-setting the system, re-booting the modem, and re-kicking the damn computer in it's smiling-at-me cd drive!!
But no....... still no connection.....
I had allready rung the help desk in the morning, and after waiting the obligitory 40 - 45 minutes listening to the 17th rendition of "Don't Dream it's over" ,was informed that there had been an authentication problem with their end of the network, but he "thought that was fixed".
After a few tests, he confirmed that no, it wasn't fixed after all.
And there still wasn't a connection for me at about 7-00 when I tried - and finaly got in when I started up once again at about 9-30.
And this comes after the whole day and evening down on Sunday...
Even when you are connected the last week or two, downloads and ftp's etc are painfully slow, which I was told is the result of them now "managing" our bandwidth/speed....and which will continue "indefinately"
Even web pages sometimes seem like your having a flash-back to dialup days now ;)
