500930 2006-11-23 07:04:00 I wouldn't recommend McAfee. I used them for years and, while fine as a service, deleting the programs when my subscription expired didn't fully work. I now have spyware on the computer that phones home, or would if I didn't block it, and which resists deletion (deleting all the McAfee associated files and registry entries works for about 5 minutes, then they all pop back again). Their help desk denied the problem, but other ex-users have posted similar problems to other forums.
I switched to AVG free, and am just as satisfied with it as I was with McAfee.

500931 2006-11-23 07:27:00 I have Nod32 which seems to be the best recognised internationally, PC World rated Bitdefender very highly. Either you will do very well. Otherwise free PC World recognise Avast slightly higher than AVG (I had AVG until recently). All very good. Go with your pocket !

500932 2006-11-23 11:24:00 I've been using AVG free for 5 years and it's fine. Nabbed maybe 5-6 greeblies in that time and dealt to them (I do keep it up to date), and OK so peeps post how many do I not know about? Well the 2 comps I use it on run fine. Next January AVG tells me it all has has to stop - seems like they're trying to sell me something but we shall see.

Otherwiaw IMHO NOD32 is the real hottie.

500933 2006-11-23 11:48:00 avg and avast seem to work beautifully on my machines for free, i despise the resource hogging inneffective norton and mcaffee

500934 2006-11-23 12:27:00 I've used both free AVG & avast1.

I've nothing against AVG, but I like avast! better.
It updates virus definitions frequently & they simply glide in automatically, with no effort required from me.
A small box appears in the system tray & a voice tells you what's happening.

I've never had a virus, but it has kicked in with a loud alarm at times when an email seemed suspicious e.g. no message header.

500935 2006-11-23 13:07:00 As PedalSlammer said BitDefender is a bestbuy for anyone, aggresive heuristic engine, low memory footprint and it's very easy to use and now they have an offer of 2 users with licensing for 2 years.

If you also decide to use a complete suite they provide that with internet security (anti-spam, firewall) works like a charm, Ive been using it for almost 2 months now and had no infection on my machine.

AVG has a new version - they are telling you to download this new one by the January date.

We (PC World) are giving away a full copy of NOD32 with each subscription or renewal during December and January. That's $70 worth. Or if you look at it a different way, buy a copy of NOD32 from us for $80 and get a free subscription to PC World :D
