also that wiki faq I listed earlier theres a chipset id utility that can be downloaded from one of the links.

soft/winmodems are problematic at best to get running in linux, but I have had success in FC1, RH9, Xandros and yes also Ubuntu but haven't tried Kubuntu.

If I remember correctly Ubuntu was very fussy about the chipset the modem was using, worked for one manufacturer but not another
